Shun Classic 9-Inch Slicing Knife with Scallops Review

Shun Classic 9-Inch Slicing Knife with Scallops
Average Reviews:

Kershaw-Shun makes the best knives I've ever owned, bar none. They come with a razor edge and are easy to re-hone with just a few strokes on the Kershaw-Shun steel (well worth purchasing to accompany this set). All their knives utilize the damascus pattern and perfectly crafted profile slice through darn near anything (food-like anyway) with ease. The scalloped detailing on this one creates air pockets which prevent food from adhering to the sides, creating even better cutting efficiency than their already high level. I can cut perfectly thin, beautiful slices from any fish time after time using this fine knife. The weight and balance are perfect. It is designed for right-handed chefs with a d-shaped handle so if you are a leftie it may not be as comfortable or easy to use.

This stunningly beautiful line of cutlery features the look and benefits of Damascus steel, yet without its rusting problems. The Damascus-look blade profile reduces sticking and results in less damage to the food being cut and faster prep times.

Rachael Ray Stoneware 4-Quart Covered Bubble & Brown Casserole "Casseroval", Red Review

Rachael Ray Stoneware 4-Quart Covered Bubble and Brown Casserole Casseroval, Red
Average Reviews:

I've always wanted to get a Rachel Ray item and until recently she only had orange items, so I was very excited to see this red casseroval with AMAZON FREE SHIPPING!!!
First off, I didn't read the item description well, saw that it said "from stove to table" and stopped reading.
When I got the casseroval, I was so excited I opened the box, washed it, turned the stove on medium/high, and put pork chops on. Within 5 minutes, I heard a crack. The entire bottom was cracked into 4 large pieces. After cleaning up the mess and putting out a small fire (literally), I opened the instructions... first words in big black bold lettering: "DO NOT USE ON STOVETOP!!!" ... my $40 lesson learned.
Aside from that horrible lesson, I LOVED it for the 5 minutes that I took it out of the box, washed it, and put it onto the stove. The handles are large, it's not as heavy as a cast iron (which is stove to oven to table), and is a great size for a family of 4. You are to fit about 8 good sized pork chops into it (double layered) to put into the oven.
I must say that I even loved it enough that I will probably order another one, and this time, will be using IN THE STOVE and TO THE TABLE :) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Wusthof 979783 Classic 8-Inch Cook's Knife Review

Wusthof 979783 Classic 8-Inch Cook's Knife
Average Reviews:

If, like some pros, you like to grip the top of the blade between your thumb and index finger, forward of the bolster, and wrap the rest of your fingers around the handle, this knife is hard to beat. Such a grip is said to give better control, straighter cuts, and narrower slices than wrapping all fingers around the handle allows.
Yesterday I took a knife-handling techniques course offered by a Wusthof rep at a local shop and was amazed by how quickly this knife turned carrots, celery, and nearly anything else into neat slices and chunks. Using the grip described above, one merely rolls the knife back onto the item being cut, lifts the back only, and repeats, sliding the food into the knife. The front of the blade merely rolls and slides on the cutting board, and is never lifted. (Compared to this, the instructor said my lift-and-chop technique was fairly effective, but abusive! *L*) With this knife, you could cut a carrot or celery into neat, thin little slices in less time than it takes to lift the lid off your food processor and get ready to clean it.
I've got other good knives - prior to this knife, I already owned Henckels 4-star 6" chef's and fillet knives, a Henckels Pro-S 3" paring knife, and a Wusthof hollow-edge santoku (another awesome tool). The Henckels knives are excellent quality, but do not lend themselves to the forward grip; I tried it with my Henckels chef's knife and found that the forged bolster felt sharp-edged when I gripped the blade this way. Make no mistake - the Henckels is an excellent knife and works well, albeit with slightly less control, when all fingers are wrapped around the handle. The Wusthoff knife has a shallower transition fillet from blade to bolster and lends itself to either grip. I'd chosen the 6" Henckels because it felt well-balanced gripping the handle alone, while the 8" seemed heavier and less agile, but with the proper grip the 8" Wusthof Classic is balanced just right. The Wusthof Grand Prix, like the Henckels, tends to encourage an all-fingers-on-handle grip, though the bolster region may be more finger-friendly. I used to look longingly at Grand Prix knives, but last night's class sold me on the benefits of the Classic handle.
Needless to say, after giving it such a thorough tryout I took this knife home with me!

The indispensable workhorse of any cutlery collection, a cook's knife performs a wide variety of cutting tasks, from fine chopping to dicing and slicing. The heavy 8-inch blade of this definitive model provides enough heft to allow the knife rather than the cook to do the cutting labor, but is more maneuverable than larger models. The length of the cutting edge makes quick work of all slicing jobs. If you don't yet own a cook's knife, or want the best investment for your dollar, this 8-inch model, which combines size with ease of use, is the one to choose.

Part of the Classic series, this knife represents two centuries of unexcelled Wusthof craftsmanship. Like other cutlery in the series, it's hand-forged from a single piece of stainless steel for maximum strength; the hand-polished blade is exactingly calibrated to be hard enough to resist dulling yet soft enough to take a keen edge when it's honed or sharpened. Dishwasher-safe and with a traditionally shaped, ergonomically designed handle that is triple-riveted for durability, this knife brings a guaranteed lifetime of low-maintenance cutting to any cook who owns it.

Wusthof 9755Classic 2-Piece Knife Starter Set Review

Wusthof 9755Classic 2-Piece Knife Starter Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.
The Wusthof Classic line is the more conservative counterpart to the Grand Prix line. The only difference, however, is the handle style. I personally prefer the Grand Prix, but this is an issue of personal preference. The balance and grip of these knives are as close to perfect as I have found. For those wondering what benefits a higher priced knife provides, one benefit is that the blade (or tang) is one piece all the way through the handle. This makes the blade much stronger, and less likely to snap.
This set includes an 8 inch chef's knife, and a 3 ½ inch paring knife.
The 8 inch chef's knife, is a great knife. Wusthof offers three sizes of chef's knives, 6, 8 and 10 inch. For most home cooks, I think the 8 inch knife is the best choice. The 6 inch is a bit small for bigger jobs, but the 10 inch is too big for most jobs. While the 8 inch isn't perfect for all uses, if you are only buying one size chef's knife (and most people only buy one), this is the one I would recommend.
As for the 3 ½ inch paring knife, this knife falls into the category of overkill for me. Most cooks will get by just fine with the 4 ½ inch utility knife. There is really no notable difference in size for the vast majority of applications between the 3 ½ inch paring knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. I prefer the 4 ½ inch utility knife, but the 3 ½ inch paring knife will do the trick for most tasks.
This set is a good deal; however, if compiling a set myself, I would include the chef's knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. Judge for yourself.

This is the set to buy if you want to start a knife collection properly or replace so-so tools with the best cutters available. The set's 8-inch cook's knife, a kitchen essential, performs a wide variety of cutting tasks, from fine chopping to dicing and slicing. The relatively small size and sharp point of the set's paring knife make it ideal for handheld and other small or intricate cutting chores, such as vegetable peeling or mincing small quantities of herbs.

Like other cutlery in the series, they're hand-forged from a single piece of stainless steel for maximum strength; the hand-polished blades are exactingly calibrated to be hard enough to resist dulling yet soft enough to take a keen edge when they're honed or sharpened. Marcato 8308 Atlas Grain Mill Review

Marcato 8308 Atlas Grain Mill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The current version of this mill has aluminum rollers. Prior versions of this mill from the same manufacturer had steel rollers. Putting aluminum rollers on a grain mill is dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb!
As someone who cares enough about whole foods to buy and regularly use a grain mill, I want something that will stand up over time and something that won't add undesirable byproducts to my food. With aluminum rollers, this mill won't meet either of these criteria. Aluminum is a soft metal. Grain kernels are hard -- including oats. Aluminum rollers will take a beating over time. More importantly, I don't want microscopic bits of aluminum in my food.
I think the change from steel to aluminum was made fairly recently. Prior reviewers may well have mills with steel rollers. It's hard to imagine why the manufacturer decided that such a change was a good idea, particularly when most likely purchasers of the product are extremely health-conscious. I don't like to write 1-star reviews, but in its current design, this mill is just not suitable for use.
I've sent it back, very disappointed. I'm going to try the Schnitzer Campo mill (not yet available on Amazon) and see if that works out better.
