Wusthof Classic Ikon 8-Piece Block Set Review

Wusthof Classic Ikon 8-Piece Block Set
Average Reviews:

For some time I wanted some really good chefs quality knives. After doing quite a bit of research and holding several different knives in upscale stores, I settled on the Wusthof Ikon Creme - and I'm very glad I did. These knives are super sharp, well balanced, and great looking. There are three different handles available in the Wusthof Ikon knives, and I chose the Creme as a personal preference.
My advice is to hold several top quality knives like these in your hand. You will notice the difference in quality in different kinds of Wusthof, Henckels, and other top name knives. You can then decide for yourself.
These knives are fantastic and will be used in my kitchen for a very long time.

Gunter Wilhelm Cutlery 250 Executive Chef 12-Piece Professional Knife Set with Wooden Storage Block Review

Gunter Wilhelm Cutlery 250 Executive Chef 12-Piece Professional Knife Set with Wooden Storage Block
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased these knives at Costco for a screaming deal. The entire 12 piece knife set was $279 and the add-on 7 piece steak knife set was an additional $75. This includes:
* Carving Fork
* 10" Meat Carving slicer w/dimples
* 9" Offset Bread knife
* 10" Chef Knife
* 10" Boning Knife
* Butcher's Cleaver
* 7" Asian Cleaver with dimples
* 7" Santoku with dimples
* 3.5" Paring Knife
* 10" Diamond Steel
* 10" honing steel
* 6 Steak knives
* 2 Wooden Knife Blocks
They are made of German forged 440C steel at a Rockwell hardness rating above that of the comparable Henckels and Wusthof, which means it will hold a sharp edge longer than those brands.
I was skeptical at first but after handling them and actually trying them out in the store, I was convinced it was a great deal. Plus, Gunter Wilhelm has a 30 day money back guarantee and Costco has a lifetime money back guarantee, so how could I go wrong?
Other than these knives being higher in quality than the competition, and other than them being a lot cheaper than the competition, I was also sold on the fact that Gunter Wilhelm has a *lifetime* guarantee on their knives. Should one break, crack, bend, chip, split, etc. in the lifetime that you own it, they will send you a new one FREE of charge, EVEN IF IT'S YOUR OWN FAULT. Now how can you beat THAT?
I've used the knives for about 3 weeks now and look forward to every time I pull one of these knives out of the block. They feel great in your hands, are razor sharp, are well balanced and are a joy to use. Just be careful, because they really are razor sharp. I barely (accidentally) brushed up against one of the blades and instantly drew blood.
To keep them razor sharp, use the honing steel prior to use every time. Just a few passes on each side will suffice.
As for customer service, I've called twice so far with questions about the knives and to state that I love them. Never was anyone rude to me like the other reviewer here has written. Don't believe him. It's a quality company with a quality product and I'm so glad I made the decision to purchase these knives.
I'd recommend them to anyone seeking a quality knife set.

Equally suited for an at-home cook as for a professional chef, this 12-piece knife set makes a useful addition to any busy kitchen. The high-quality knives feature precision-forged blades made of 440C German steel--a combination alloy made of high-carbon steel and stainless steel that sharpens easily, holds a razor-sharp cutting edge, and resists staining. Plus, the knives come sharpened all the way to the base of the blade where most cutting occurs, and their attractive Pakkawood triple-tang handles provide superior balance and an ergonomic grip for exceptional comfort and control. The set includes a 10-inch chef knife, a paring knife, a Santoku knife, an offset bread knife, and an Asian cleaver, as well as a 10-inch pointer slicer, a carving fork, a boning/fillet knife, a butcher's cleaver, and two sharpening steels (a 10-inch diamond steel and a 10-inch honing steel) that help keep the blades in good working order. Even more, the set provides a large wooden block that not only showcases the collection, but also safely and securely stores the knives when not in use. Using the knives on bamboo cutting boards works the best since bamboo won't warp, crack, or split, and it's naturally anti-bacterial. To clean, hand wash the knives with warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse and dry immediately. The 12-piece knife set measures approximately 12 by 6 by 17 inches and carries a lifetime warranty.

Wusthof Culinar 10-Inch Super Slicer Wavy Serrated Knife Review

I wanted to replace my cheap knife block set with a great one that can last a generation and found Wushtof Culinar Series to my liking. Initially, I thought the metallic handle could be slippery. So, I went to a local store and tested it and found it to be be very very grippy and solid to hold. I liked how these knives curve on the handle. That helps handle get a perfect grip in the hand.
This is a very long serrated knife and it works great to slice meats, bread and large items like watermelon. With our old bread knife, we could hardly cut the bread neatly without crushing it producing lots of bread crumbs. With this one, we are able to cut the bread like they do at bakeries. Perfect!
You will not regret spending money on this. You can avoid get a seperate bread knife and carving knife if you get this one.

This is the super slicer, a 10-in. long knife with a serrated edge that's ideal for slicing foot-long sandwiches or artisan-style breads that tend to be larger than most. The serrated blade cracks through hard crusts yet won't tear and pull the softer insides so your slices stay intact for serving.Part of the Wusthof collection, Culinar knives feature the same legendary forged stainless precision blade and balanced design as lines such as Grand Prix. Its unique patented 18/10 stainless handle sets it apart from more traditional Wusthof knives, adding a contemporary elegance to a timeless, functional kitchen tool.

Wusthof Classic 8-Piece Knife Set with Block Review

Wusthof Classic 8-Piece Knife Set with Block

I got this as a wedding gift, and I was amazed at how much of a difference it makes in the kitchen! Good knives make cooking such an enjoyable experience, and Wusthof is well-known to be one of the best out there. The 8-piece set is perfect for people who want to start with a good set and build up on it. Of course I use the chef's knife the most, but I also use the bread knife and paring knife a lot too. I think a santoku knife would be a nice addition to this set, and perhaps steak knives would be wonderful to fill in the 6 slots on the bottom of the block, but in terms of practicality, I never feel like I need more than what I already have (but this is coming from a person who is a beginner in the kitchen). I have been using my knives for about 1 1/2 years now, and the knives are still as sharp as they were when we first bought it. I'm sure we will have to sharpen them eventually, but with good care I expect these to last a very long time.

Known worldwide for their superior performance, Wusthof knives are the cutlery of choice among many professionals and by discriminating amateur chefs. The Classic series features a traditional styling that makes it the most popular of the Wusthof lines. The blades are formed with the perfect balance of high-carbon steel and a stain-resistant alloy so they retain their edge longer and are easier to resharpen. The blade is ground and polished by computer, ensuring perfect tapering from bolster to tip, and the edge is then hand-honed for precision slicing. The sturdy feel of the knives is achieved by the weighted bolster, Wusthof's signature feature. The tang runs through synthetic handles and is secured with three rivets.

The set includes an 8-inch chef\'s knife, a 6-inch sandwich knife, an 8-inch serrated bread knife, a 4-1/2-inch utility knife, and a 3-1/2-inch paring knife. Wusthof Classic 6-Piece Steak Knife Set Review

Wusthof Classic 6-Piece Steak Knife Set
Average Reviews:

Many people might scoff at a set of steak knives at this price, My only retort is to relate the story of sneaking around (because of my wife's non belief that there was a difference) and buying a set of the Wusthof Classic Steak Knives and using them for the first time. No matter what knife you have laying around and how sharp it is, the Wusthof is superior. It is the most obvious in steak knives because you use them everyday.
The edges are plain edged, honed by hand. These are NOT your STEAK HOUSE knives - no serrations. Your SLICING fine meat not disposing of a lost tourist in Texas!
Hand washing only, even with today's more sophisticated dishwashers with knife compartments preventing dinging and other damage to the blade, the high water heat and chemicals in the diswashing soap will ruin ANY knife. Think of the glass that you've had for years that you've run through the dish washer. Look closely and you'll see the glass is actually ETCHED from the detergent. And the old wood handled paring knives. Notice how they are duller and harder to sharpen? The dishwater temperature and chemicals from the detergent have damaged the steel. By the way, there is no SUPER steel that isn't known to all knife makers. Metallurgy is an exacting science, a formula to be followed, not magic with the Sorcerer and Mickey Mouse as his apprentice. Wusthof PROUDLY stamps the which metal their knives are made of right on the blade. It may be heard in a sales spiel from the college kid selling complete cutlery sets, that knives can be dishwasher cleaned. Nope.I don't put my saw blades, drill or router bits in the dishwasher either. They are precision edged tools just like your knives.
I'm very happy with this purchase everytime they come out for a meal. They feel comfortable, familiar like an extension of your hand, as all the Wusthof Classic cutlery do.
Good weight, balance and excellent hand honed edge. This knife is the one my wife reaches for first for her needs in the kitchen. Never argue with a woman with a knife in her hand. Especially a Wusthof!!

Wusthof 979783 Classic 8-Inch Cook's Knife Review

Wusthof 979783 Classic 8-Inch Cook's Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If, like some pros, you like to grip the top of the blade between your thumb and index finger, forward of the bolster, and wrap the rest of your fingers around the handle, this knife is hard to beat. Such a grip is said to give better control, straighter cuts, and narrower slices than wrapping all fingers around the handle allows.
Yesterday I took a knife-handling techniques course offered by a Wusthof rep at a local shop and was amazed by how quickly this knife turned carrots, celery, and nearly anything else into neat slices and chunks. Using the grip described above, one merely rolls the knife back onto the item being cut, lifts the back only, and repeats, sliding the food into the knife. The front of the blade merely rolls and slides on the cutting board, and is never lifted. (Compared to this, the instructor said my lift-and-chop technique was fairly effective, but abusive! *L*) With this knife, you could cut a carrot or celery into neat, thin little slices in less time than it takes to lift the lid off your food processor and get ready to clean it.
I've got other good knives - prior to this knife, I already owned Henckels 4-star 6" chef's and fillet knives, a Henckels Pro-S 3" paring knife, and a Wusthof hollow-edge santoku (another awesome tool). The Henckels knives are excellent quality, but do not lend themselves to the forward grip; I tried it with my Henckels chef's knife and found that the forged bolster felt sharp-edged when I gripped the blade this way. Make no mistake - the Henckels is an excellent knife and works well, albeit with slightly less control, when all fingers are wrapped around the handle. The Wusthoff knife has a shallower transition fillet from blade to bolster and lends itself to either grip. I'd chosen the 6" Henckels because it felt well-balanced gripping the handle alone, while the 8" seemed heavier and less agile, but with the proper grip the 8" Wusthof Classic is balanced just right. The Wusthof Grand Prix, like the Henckels, tends to encourage an all-fingers-on-handle grip, though the bolster region may be more finger-friendly. I used to look longingly at Grand Prix knives, but last night's class sold me on the benefits of the Classic handle.
Needless to say, after giving it such a thorough tryout I took this knife home with me!

The indispensable workhorse of any cutlery collection, a cook's knife performs a wide variety of cutting tasks, from fine chopping to dicing and slicing. The heavy 8-inch blade of this definitive model provides enough heft to allow the knife rather than the cook to do the cutting labor, but is more maneuverable than larger models. The length of the cutting edge makes quick work of all slicing jobs. If you don't yet own a cook's knife, or want the best investment for your dollar, this 8-inch model, which combines size with ease of use, is the one to choose.

Wusthof 9755Classic 2-Piece Knife Starter Set Review

Wusthof 9755Classic 2-Piece Knife Starter Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.
The Wusthof Classic line is the more conservative counterpart to the Grand Prix line. The only difference, however, is the handle style. I personally prefer the Grand Prix, but this is an issue of personal preference. The balance and grip of these knives are as close to perfect as I have found. For those wondering what benefits a higher priced knife provides, one benefit is that the blade (or tang) is one piece all the way through the handle. This makes the blade much stronger, and less likely to snap.
This set includes an 8 inch chef's knife, and a 3 ½ inch paring knife.
The 8 inch chef's knife, is a great knife. Wusthof offers three sizes of chef's knives, 6, 8 and 10 inch. For most home cooks, I think the 8 inch knife is the best choice. The 6 inch is a bit small for bigger jobs, but the 10 inch is too big for most jobs. While the 8 inch isn't perfect for all uses, if you are only buying one size chef's knife (and most people only buy one), this is the one I would recommend.
As for the 3 ½ inch paring knife, this knife falls into the category of overkill for me. Most cooks will get by just fine with the 4 ½ inch utility knife. There is really no notable difference in size for the vast majority of applications between the 3 ½ inch paring knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. I prefer the 4 ½ inch utility knife, but the 3 ½ inch paring knife will do the trick for most tasks.
This set is a good deal; however, if compiling a set myself, I would include the chef's knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. Judge for yourself.

Wusthof Classic 5-Inch Serrated Utility Knife Review

Wusthof Classic 5-Inch Serrated Utility Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In Europe, this knife is called the "sausage" or "brunch" knife. Since Americans don't usually cut baguettes or weisswurst as part of making lunch, however, Amazon has chosen to call this what it is - the serrated utility knife.
Name notwithstanding, the edge on this knife is the same as the one on the Wusthof tomato and bread knives, and the knife does in fact do splendidly on tomatoes (which aren't too terribly different from sausage) and crusty bread (as long as it is skinny french bread - get an 8-inch knife for the hefty american stuff).
Where this knife truly excels, however, is cutting citrus. The blade is long enough to handle grapefruit, and the scalloped edge will cut even kumquats and key limes without crushing the pulp.
So, I would have called this the citrus knife (or, maybe, the "soft things with a hard skin" knife). While mine doesn't get used as often as the paring or chef's knife, it's among our kitchen's top-five.

The straight, serrated blade of this 5-inch knife cuts perfectly through sausages, tomatoes, and fruit skins. Cooks can find many other uses for this handy knife; for example, it works beautifully as a bar companion, cutting citrus wedges effortlessly. Because of its portability, it's also a great tool to pack for picnics.

Wusthof 2036 Bamboo Cutting Board Review

Wusthof 2036 Bamboo Cutting Board

I received this Wuestof cutting board as a gift, along with some Wuesthof knives and kitchen shears. (if you would like to read my reviews for these items, click on "see all my reviews".) It's a good combo; I only had plastic cutting boards, and the wooden ones better for your knives. Plastic ones (and don't get the really hard ones)are useful for cutting meat, and putting into the dishwasher; but the wood looks nicer. Also,it is made from bamboo, a renewable resource, and not from petrochemicals.
This 8X12 cutting board is just right size for slicing, dicing and chopping up a few veggies. The Wuesthof 4.5 inch "multi-prep cook's knife" works very well for this. The Wuesthof logo is imprinted on the front side, but I don't see "Emeril" on it anywhere. The back side of the board is a cutting board,too, but it also has four rubber "feet" which add stability when used right-side-up. Groves on either side provide easy hand-holds. Flip it right-side up, pair it with a cheese knife, and you're good to go for serving cheese.
Good price/value. Treat it well--don't use the dishwasher or serrated knives, condition it with mineral oil from time to time. Highly recommend.

Knife is the perfect size for kitchen work that requires more than a 3" paring knife but less than my 8" chef's knife. It is the most used knife in our kitchen. Easy to use, and it really does sharpen knives properly. A really beautiful piece of design--the curved sharpening surfaces give the proper angle without any particular skill from the user.

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Super Slicer Review

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Super Slicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great all-around slicer. We've used it on very soft, moist cakes and breads - both soft and crusty.
But, thanks to a sharp edge and the length, it does a great job on meats. It breezes right through a London Broil and does a beautiful job slicing up an entire beef tenderloin into individual filet mignons. Sharp enough and long enough that you can usually complete a cut in a single stroke, providing a cleaner cut. I even tried it on a turkey last Thanksgiving and it worked great.
One really nice feature of this blade over many other slicers (including some other Wusthofs) is that it is scalloped on only one side, so you can still take it to a steel between professional sharpenings.

The Classic cutlery line bears all the traits that Wusthof knives are known for: impeccable construction, incredible sharpness, and long-lasting durability. Each Classic knife is precision-forged--blade, bolster, and tang--from a single piece of high-carbon, stain-resistant steel. The blade is tested by lasers and honed by hand, with computer-controlled front-to-back tapering, grinding, and polishing. A visible full tang--the blade\'s shaft runs the entire length of the handle--ensures excellent balance and strength. Classic handles are molded from a durable black synthetic called Hostaform-C with traditional triple riveting. The knives promise a lifetime of hard-working companionship in the kitchen.

With the second longest blade in Wusthof's slicer line-up, the super slicer is the knife to reach for when slicing meats or fresh-baked bread. Instead of using standard pointed serration, the slicer's blade features reverse serration that, while unmistakably sharp, slices less aggressively for minimal tearing. Like the rest of the knives in the Classic collection, this one can go in the dishwasher. Wusthof recommends washing by hand, however, for maximum blade performance and long life.

I bought this knife because of a great review in The New York Times. Every word of it is true. You will return to this knife over and over. It will be THE knife that you always reach for.

Craftsmanship has been a tradition at Wusthof for over 190 years. Quality and precision have always been the standard that we measure our knife by and our Gourmet line of stamped German knives take precision to a new level. Each knife in this line is cut from a piece of steel using a laser beam to make a perfect blade. Comfortable to hold and razor-sharp, the 7-in. Deli Knife cuts slices of cheese, meat and sandwiches with ease. The offset blade lets you get even slices in a single motion, especially with harder foods that require a little more leverage. The blade is slightly serrated so you leave food intact. It also provides ample clearance between the knuckles and the cutting board.

Wusthof Classic Gourmet 3-Piece Knife Set Review

Wusthof Classic Gourmet 3-Piece Knife Set

This set includes an 8 inch chef's knife, a 3 ½ inch paring knife and a 6 inch sandwich knife.
The 8 inch chef's knife, is a great knife. Wusthof offers four sizes of chef's knives in the Classic line, 5, 6, 8 and 10 inch. For most home cooks, I think the 8 inch knife is the best choice. The 5 and 6 inch are a bit small for bigger jobs, but the 10 inch is too big for most jobs.
I prefer the 4 ½ inch utility knife, but the 3 ½ inch paring knife will do the trick.
I have found very few uses for the 6 inch sandwich knife. I prefer the larger size of the chef's knife or the smaller 4 ½ inch utility knife. This knife is just the wrong width and length for most tasks.
This set is a good deal; however, if compiling a set myself, I would include the chef's knife, the 4 ½ inch utility knife, and the 9 inch bread knife. Judge for yourself.

The 8-inch cook's knife, an essential kitchen tool, is the centerpiece of this useful collection. It performs a wide variety of cutting tasks, from fine chopping to dicing and slicing. The relatively small size and sharp point of the set's paring knife make it ideal for handheld and other small or intricate cutting chores, such as vegetable peeling or mincing small quantities of herbs. The thin, narrow blade of the 6-inch sandwich knife plus its flared tip make it best for slicing sandwiches, meat, and fruit. A knife collection in itself, the set also makes a fine start for the cutlery collector.

Part of the Classic series, these knives represents two centuries of unexcelled Wusthof craftsmanship. Like other cutlery in the series, they're hand-forged from a single piece of stainless steel for maximum strength; the hand-polished blades are exactingly calibrated to be hard enough to resist dulling yet soft enough to take a keen edge when they're honed or sharpened. Dishwasher-safe and with traditionally shaped, ergonomically designed handles that are triple-riveted for durability, this set bring a guaranteed lifetime of low-maintenance cutting to its owners.

Wusthof Classic Bread Knife and Board Set - Wusthof 1590 Review

Wusthof Classic Bread Knife and Board Set - Wusthof 1590
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wusthof makes great knives and this one is no exception. This is a nice sharp knife which will keep its edge for a long time and the fact that a cutting board comes with it is an added plus. It's just long enough for things which come out of a standard 4.5" loaf pan. However the somewhat short 6 inch length makes it less useful for cutting the big round crusty loaves produced using the New York Times no-knead method or the breads from Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day: 100 New Recipes Featuring Whole Grains, Fruits, Vegetables, and Gluten-Free Ingredients or Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day: The Discovery That Revolutionizes Home Baking
If you plan to use it on hearth style artisan breads in addition to standard loaves, you'd probably be happier with one having a longer blade, perhaps 8 or 9 inches.

Wusthof Culinar 9-Inch Bread Knife Review

Wusthof Culinar 9-Inch Bread Knife

There are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.
The Wusthof Culinar line is an all stainless steel look, rather than a black handle. Although the picture and some descriptions want you to think this is a single piece knife, be advised that the hand is a separate piece of stainless steel molded onto the tang. I personally prefer the handle of the Grand Prix and Classic, because the grip is surer for me, but this is, to some extent, a matter of personal preference. This series "looks" more professional to some (like a Viking stove).
This particular model, the bread knife, is a great knife. Many people think tomatoes are the hardest food items to clearly cut. I think bread is much more difficult; but this knife makes the task seem easy.
I highly recommend the Wusthof 9" bread knife.

Wusthof 4109-7 Classic 5-Inch Tomato Knife Review

Wusthof 4109-7 Classic 5-Inch Tomato Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I began collecting Wusthof-Trident Classic knives twenty years ago, I chose the basics first: cook's knives, parers, slicers, utility knives, steak knives, boning & filet knives. I acquired them one or two at a time, always on sale, because this cutlery has been an expensive investment. When Wusthof added a tomato knife to this line, I bought it even though I wasn't sure if I would like it or use it a lot. Now I recommend this 5-inch tomato knife to everyone. Its serrated edge hasn't needed sharpening ever, and it cuts, slices, dices, and chops fresh tomatoes so quickly. The forked tip is great for taking out the stem ends of tomatoes. I've never used my tomato knife on anything other than tomatoes, which is why I think it has stayed so sharp. I use my 8-inch serrated bread knife for slicing bagels and breads, and my 5-inch serrated utility knife for cutting citrus and other fruit. Also, I hand-wash and dry this knife and keep it stored in a wooden block.

The sharp, serrated blade of this knife cuts tomato and other fruit skins perfectly without squashing. The knife also works beautifully as a bar companion for cutting lemon wedges and for spearing cocktail onions or olives with its forked tip. Because of its portability, this tomato knife is also suitable for picnic and other outdoor food cutting.
