Global GS-14 6-Inch 15 cm Serrated Utility, Scallop Knife Review

Global GS-14 6-Inch 15 cm Serrated Utility, Scallop Knife
Average Reviews:

I bought this knife along with a few other Global knives and ended up returning it. This is not to say that this is a bad knife but I found that it was unnecessary alongside the rest of the Global knives I purchased. The non-serrated knifes are so sharp that there were practicaly no instances where I needed to use this knife. I did end-up keeping the 8" serrated bread knife but as long as you have that one, you don't really need another serrated knives.
I like being able to sharpen my knives frequently and this isn't very easy to do with serrated knives. A special tool and technique is required and the whole process is very time consuming. In addition, make sure that you use a ceramic sharpener on all global knives. Its supposed to have a different grit that is better for them. Kyocera (ceramic knife manufacturer) makes one specifically for Global but they are quite expensive.

J.A. Henckels International Classic 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Chef's Knife Review

J.A. Henckels International Classic 8-Inch Stainless-Steel Chef's Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's important to note that this knife is not made in Germany (the 4 Star, 5 Star, and Pro-S series are).
I started my good knife collection with a set of 3 of these International Classic knives. I later decided to get a larger set (9) of the 4 Star series, some of the finest knives in the world. However, I prefer this chef's knife over the 4 Star one. The grip is heavier and makes the balance a bit nicer.
For the paring knife, I much prefer the 4 Star one, so I wouldn't recommend the set of 3, but this knife is great. I use it all the time. If you are starting out on a knife collection, I recommend these things:
-a 4 Star 3-inch paring knife (or 2 if you are lazy with clean-up)
-this Chef's knife
-a cheap and large bread knife
-a medium sized 5-6in utility knife (good quality)
-a honing steel (good quality)
-a wood block to put them in (good knives should not be shoved into a drawer with other knives)
-[optional]a carving set of knife and fork, if you need carving utensils (I don't much)
I'd weigh the cost of these together against getting a more expensive set (if you are on a budget).

Wusthof Classic 5-Inch Serrated Utility Knife Review

Wusthof Classic 5-Inch Serrated Utility Knife
Average Reviews:

In Europe, this knife is called the "sausage" or "brunch" knife. Since Americans don't usually cut baguettes or weisswurst as part of making lunch, however, Amazon has chosen to call this what it is - the serrated utility knife.
Name notwithstanding, the edge on this knife is the same as the one on the Wusthof tomato and bread knives, and the knife does in fact do splendidly on tomatoes (which aren't too terribly different from sausage) and crusty bread (as long as it is skinny french bread - get an 8-inch knife for the hefty american stuff).
Where this knife truly excels, however, is cutting citrus. The blade is long enough to handle grapefruit, and the scalloped edge will cut even kumquats and key limes without crushing the pulp.
So, I would have called this the citrus knife (or, maybe, the "soft things with a hard skin" knife). While mine doesn't get used as often as the paring or chef's knife, it's among our kitchen's top-five.

The straight, serrated blade of this 5-inch knife cuts perfectly through sausages, tomatoes, and fruit skins. Cooks can find many other uses for this handy knife; for example, it works beautifully as a bar companion, cutting citrus wedges effortlessly. Because of its portability, it's also a great tool to pack for picnics.

Part of the Classic series, this knife represents two centuries of unexcelled Wusthof craftsmanship. Like other cutlery in the series, it's hand-forged from a single piece of stainless steel for maximum strength; the hand-polished blade is exactingly calibrated to be hard enough to resist dulling yet soft enough to take a keen edge when it's honed or sharpened. Dishwasher-safe and with a traditionally shaped, ergonomically designed handle that is triple-riveted for durability, this knife brings a guaranteed lifetime of low-maintenance cutting to its owners.

Shun DM0741 Classic U2 (Ultimate Utility) Knife Review

Shun DM0741 Classic U2 (Ultimate Utility) Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I believe if you're serious about cooking, you should own great cookware and excellent knives. I finally stepped up and got excellent knives. For those who haven't heard the hype, Shun is one of the most respected knife brands in the world.
Great features of the entire line include these cool "D" shaped handles that fit your hand better. Each knife is made in a right- and left-handed version ([...] for lefties). The steel used for the blades is harder than what you would find in most other knives. The knives are EXTREMELY sharp.
If you're building your set and want to take care of the must-haves first. Move this down on your priority list. Get the chef's, paring and bread knives first. With that said, there is a place for this knife in your kitchen. As with all of my other Shun knives, this one is extremely sharp and it's relatively light.
This is great for sandwiches; you can use one knife to do everything well. I like the wider blade on this better than the narrow utility and tomato blades. This knife does not replace the bread knife, but it is good for small quantities of bread. I quickly tired of it when I used it to prep French bread for bread pudding.
This is an expensive, but lifetime investment. I encourage you to visit stores and feel the knives in your hand to make sure you are comfortable with them. For more info on Shun, check out Alton Brown's website. For ratings on various brands and types of knives, check out Cooks llustrated's equipment ratings.
Unless you are a daily sandwich fiend, make this one of the last knives you get to complete your set. It is certainly a nice knife, but not as crucial as other knives. My only regret is that I already own the tomato and utility knives.

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star 5-Inch High Carbon Stainless-Steel Serrated Utility Knife Review

Zwilling J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star 5-Inch High Carbon Stainless-Steel Serrated Utility Knife
Average Reviews:

We purchased a Henckels Four-Star set about ten (10) years ago and use it daily. Out of the set of six or seven knives, this utility knife is our most frequently used. It is extremely useful in food preparation, holds an edge longer than the other non-serrated knives, and isn't affected by dish-washer abuse.
This is a great product that will last you many years. One caveat: NEVER allow your MOTHER-IN-LAW to borrow it and use it as a screwdriver. It will be ruined - hence my purchase of a second one of these knives.

Rada Cutlery Cooks Utility Knife, Made in USA, Dishwasher Safe Black Handle (W240) Review

Rada Cutlery Cooks Utility Knife, Made in USA, Dishwasher Safe Black Handle (W240)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been given a set of Rada knives and liked the sharpness of the blades. I needed another chef's knife, so I bought this one. Although it's lighter and stays sharper than my Henkels, it takes some getting used to. I've seriously cut myself twice with it. Rada blades are fairly flexible, so they seem to be better for smaller knives than these larger ones. I still use this knife, but it's not really strong enough to be a serious chef's knife.

Pure Komachi 2 Series 6-Inch Scalloped Sandwich Knife Review

Pure Komachi 2 Series 6-Inch Scalloped Sandwich Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a four different Pure Komachi knives. This sadwich knife is the most unusual and practical. It just can't be beat for slicing bagels. After cutting the bagel it serves as a fine spreader for the cream cheese. It's also great for narrower breads like baguettes.
Mine is not purple, but I dig the purple color and sent a few to my family members, who use them with delight.

A fantastic multi-purpose knife, the 6-inch scalloped sandwich knife features a large, reverse scalloped edge to cut through fruits, vegetables, and bread with ease. Its spatula tip gets spreadable condiments out of a jar and the back of the blade spreads them. The bold, bright blade color is achieved by bonding food-safe, FDA-approved resin to a high-carbon stainless-steel blade. A high-carbon blade retains a super-sharp edge over extended use, and the non-stick coating resists corrosion, makes cleaning simple, and helps the knife glide through food with ease. The handle is lightweight and ergonomically contoured for a comfortable, fatigue-reducing grip. Incredibly sharp and decidedly attention-getting, Pure Komachi 2 knives make a delightful addition to any kitchen. They are dishwasher safe and cover a useful range, with open-stock pieces as well as handy and versatile sets.

I have been looking for a good bread knife for a long time. I bought this product for my daughter-in-law in red and one for myself in black. We are both Very pleased with this knife.
