Krups FEM2B 2-Slice Toaster, Black & Silver Review

Krups FEM2B 2-Slice Toaster, Black and Silver
Average Reviews:

After having gone through several toasters that looked sleek, but couldn't toast worth a darn -- let alone set off the smoke alarm -- I turned to Consumer Products for guidance (11/04). We picked their number 2 because it looked functional without too many needless gimmicks, whereas the brand name of #1 reminded us too much of the toaster that burnt the bread and toasted its electronics. Also, rather than spending over ten bucks on a "Small Applicance Contract", we tossed in three more bucks to get the number-four-rated toaster as a backup should the Krups ever fail. The toaster yields a nice evenly browned slice of bread or toaster waffle without beeping, dancing or burning up the kitchen. Sorry to learn that others encountered uneven browning -- we are delighted with the Krups, and it looks good too.

Black & Decker Infrawave Toaster Review

I shouldn't have had to take my toaster apart, but I did.
The first time I powered this toaster up I was taken aback by it's punishing, deafening, ambulance-siren-like wail. It was more high pitched than and nearly the volume of a fire alarm. The three piercing stabs at my ears were just to let me know the toaster was on. Really, the only purpose of the power button to power up the LCD interface to configure your toasting settings. 99% of the time, I'm making toast with my toaster. I don't really need an LCD screen. But even more so I don't need the god-forsaken howl of the undead ringing in my ears and waking up my neighbors. I searched in vain for a mute button, consulted the manual, loudly and frustratedly searched through the options (every change to the settings replies with an affirmative squeal) only to find that there was no setting which would disable the noise.
Now, my ears aren't overly sensitive. I live on an extremely busy street and I like loud, abrasive music. But this toaster was made by a sadist. What were these horrific screams trying to tell me? That the toaster was on? I knew that because I had just turned it on! 5 minutes after you've used it, it engages it's shriek mechanism again to tell you it's about to turn off! Thank you, but I don't really care! Just turn off! It would be one thing if this noise were being used as some sort of safety mechanism like a smoke alarm (the sound of which is comparable). But this was the basic functionality, and happened every time the toaster was used.
Clearly, this was unacceptable, so I was forced to disassemble the toaster. It wasn't particularly easy to do, thanks to a tamper-proof screw on the bottom. I was able to remove that with tiny screwdriver and some effort. To take the top off, I also needed to remove the toast lowering mechanism. I plugged the toaster back in and was able to locate the source of the racket. It is a black circle with a + on top, located next to the LCD screen. It serves no function whatsoever, so I removed it. Finally, I am able to make my toast in peace.
Black and Decker: If you're going to make something that makes this much awful noise, please provide a mute option for those who find that alarms and sirens are the loudest things they want to hear in the morning.

Sensio Bella Professional Slice Toaster Review

Sensio Bella Professional Slice Toaster

I spent way too many hours reading reviews and studying features of toasters. My husband finally chose for me and had Bella sent to the house. I just could not bring myself to spend that much money on a toaster. How different could it really be? Toast is toast. I had read someone commenting that the bread was toasted on the outside but soft and chewy on the inside. I was skeptical. I make my own bread..sourdough, rye, and multigrain. I toasted multigrain first and was amazed. The toast was crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. It really is different. Even my son noticed the difference. The seeds and grains of the bread were actually enhanced by being warmed but not dry. I make bread in all sizes and it accommodates them all. Great for short pieces of bread-no need for tongs. Long oblong pieces fit great.
Pros: long slots, sleek style, easy to clean, built solid, have read you can replace the heating elements, toasts evenly, toasts only the outside of the bread (what a difference)
Cons: It is the size of a small mailbox.

Breville CT70XL Ikon 2-Slice Electric Toaster Review

Breville CT70XL Ikon 2-Slice Electric Toaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This toaster has a few features that really stand out:
-Consistent Results.
If your partner likes their bagel lightly toasted, and you like yours golden brown, you can both get what you want without any guesswork.
-Digital Readout
There is a digital readout that gives you unambiguous feedback. You can see at all times what darkness you have the toaster set to. It also gives you a little count-down timer so you know how long you have left.
-Cancel button.
You don't have to pry at the handle to cancel your toast. Of course, since you get consistent results, you probably don't have to cancel that often.
-Toast-popup.
If you do pull the handle up, your toast comes up for you to look at it without having to cancel the toasting. Just let go, and the toast drops back down to continue the cycle.
-Audio feedback
It beeps when your toast is done. Sometimes the pop-up sound can be lost over the sound of the coffee machine. The beep is much easier to hear.
-More options I don't use.
There are some more buttons in the front that I've not had to use. Defrost and warm, I think.
I'm very pleased with my new toaster. I like over-engineered devices- devices where someone has thought of nearly everything and found an elegant solution. This toaster doesn't disappoint.
Update, Aug 14, 2009:
After two years of use this toaster is still going strong.

Breville Ikon Toaster CT7 Review

Breville Ikon Toaster CT7
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I hate toasters, that is to say, I hate toasters that don't... toast. In the past, I have returned new toasters along with toasted samples that show how poorly the product functioned. It has been a curiousity of mine that we can put men on the moon, explore the ocean depths, even perform complex organ transplants; yet man can not create an appliance that will consistently and evenly toast a piece of bread.
Our previous toaster lived a long, albeit, mediocre life. We would have liked to have replaced it with a similar model since our expectations (low) were already molded by the last one, but it had be discontinued which left us on the quest to find another brand. Arghhh!
The search ended with the Breville CT75XL 4 slice toaster. We've had the toaster for about 30 days and have toasted a variety of breads, bagels, and frozen waffles; all to our complete amazement and satisfaction.
The unit's footprint is a bit large but acceptable, yet then most 4 slice toasters tend to be on the behemoth side these days. I'm not sure why the darkness control goes to all the up to 10 as we have found that setting it to 4 seems to be plenty dark enough. The digital display has an integrated timer with segments that blink as the toasting time counts down. When the toast is ready, the toaster will beep just prior to popping up the product.
Now, I'm not a professional product reviewer so I won't go into the nitty-gritty details as to the features. You can read all about them from the manufacturer's website. I just wanted to let those that are interested, that, for one who hates toasters, the Breville has been a pleasant find.

Housed in premium brushed stainless steel, this sleek-looking four-slice toaster provides extra-wide and deep toasting slots that easily accommodate thicker breads, bagels, or frozen waffles. The slots are self-centering for even toasting, while the high-lift lever makes it simple to remove smaller items. The unit also offers a "lift-and-look" feature that allows for lifting the toast lever any time throughout the toasting progress to monitor toasting without interrupting the cooking cycle. The toaster's LCD display indicates the toasting progress, and its control panel includes an electronic browning control dial and three special setting options--bagel, defrost, and reheat--plus a cancel button to end the cycle at any time. A "toast ready" sound alerts when the toasted item is ready to enjoy. Other highlights include a removable crumb tray for quick crumb disposal and handy cord storage in the base to help keep countertops tidy. The 1500-watt toaster measures 14 by 5-1/2 by 8 inches and carries a limited lifetime warranty.

KitchenAid KMTT200 Toaster, 2 Slice Review

KitchenAid KMTT200 Toaster, 2 Slice
Average Reviews:

I have the all steel version.
Pros: Very solid construction. Although is quite large, it is good looking and gives you the feeling of something that will last a long time. Very even toasting, works great, and the outside stays totally cool. After several cycles it does eventually get warm, but not hot.
I like it a lot, except for one thing:
Negative: The slots are just a little too short. It fits only the regular Mrs Baird's type of bread loaf.
If you try to toast any other type of shorter and wider bread, it will not fit in the slots as they are about 1/2 inch shorter than the slice of bread. If you look at it, it is obvious that there was enough room to extend the slots at least another inch in front. The design team at KitchenAid must be eating one type of bread only, otherwise they would have run into this problem (or perhaps they don't use this toaster).
I wanted to return it because of this, but I already threw away the box (I guess this proves I am a moron), so I am stuck with it.

Bodum 10709-01US Bistro 2-Slice Toaster with Bagel and Bun Warmer Review

Average Reviews:

A thunderstorm knocked out our Breville, which we liked very much, but when I went to replace it I found that the price had increased and shopped for a more economical replacement, settling on this one from Bodum.
Since color had been a problem for others, and wasn't important to us given our neutral kitchen design, I chose black. We could not have been more delighted.
This is a knockout design, both functionally and aesthetically.
Most important, this thing makes predictably wonderful toast: perfect toast, nutty and sweet. It's as if we'd never tasted toast before! Controls are sensibly located, clearly labeled, and easy to read. If you want to conceal the cord, there's a clever way to do it that doesn't intrude on the design. The rubberized surface doesn't attract fingerprints and is easy to clean. Whoever designed this toaster clearly thought about how people used toasters, pondered how to improve the experience, and put that learning to work. Its only shortcoming might be slots that are a tad narrower - but just a tad - than some other toasters, but this is a problem only for those not willing to trim an occasional bagel.
Visitors looking for the toaster in your kitchen may hesitate for a moment, thinking that your Bodum toaster's some sort of new iPod deck -- it's that different (and handsome).

Made of durable stainless steel with a unique, rubberized exterior, this contemporary toaster not only looks great on the counter, but it also accommodates up to two slices of bread at a time, toasting them to warm, crispy perfection. The unit's adjustable-width slots help ensure even toasting, and its built-in, pop-up warming rack works well for keeping baked goods warm--anything from sliced bread and bagels to English muffins, hamburger buns, and croissants. Defrost and cancel buttons make it easy to defrost items before toasting or to cancel the session at any time. Other highlights include variable browning and temperature settings, a footed base, a cord retainer for adjusting the length or storing it neatly away, and a removable crumb tray for quick cleanup. Rows of raised dots create an interesting exterior texture, and the brand name "bodum" up the side adds to the toaster's overall visual appeal. Available in a variety of beautiful colors, the 900-watt two-slice toaster measures approximately 12-2/5 by 7-8/9 by 10-2/5 inches and carries a two-year warranty.

Average Reviews:

We bought this to replace a Rowenta toaster that was also long and narrow, but never worked well. Our choices were limited as it needed to fit in a narrow space behind our cooktop.
This looks lovely in the kitchen and toasts evenly. The variety of settings works well for various breads, although it will take some practice with different bread types to see which setting is best for each. The default setting is fine for standard bread. Crank it up for bagels or rye bread.
In response to another review, the toaster doesn't wait 10 seconds before starting to toast. It gives you 10 seconds to change the setting after putting the bread in, but it begins to heat right away.
We are very satisfied with this toaster compared to the four times more expensive Rowenta that was horrible!

Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster Review

Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent about a year looking at toasters on Amazon. Needed one for my renovated house. I just could not bring myself to pay $128 for a toaster, but after reading features, was also unable to buy anything else. I convinced myself that it would look so great with my black soapstone counters and brushed stainless appliance junk that I should really consider it a renovation cost. Problem solved!
Toaster arrived last weekend, have taken several days off from job to make toast. First, let's just say how cool the thing looks and works. Yes, it is weighty, but I don't carry it around much. But, it's got these cool tech buttons that do all the heaviest work, like moving the toast up and down. Then there is that row of LEDs that flash to show how much toasting time remains. Also very cool! And it wasn't until I read revies here that I understood what "bagel" settings were. This one has 'em. "Lift and look" takes away some of the dark side of toasting, but is great for the anxiety-ridden. "A little bit more" is also fun, though there is no "little bit less". Anyway great fun and great looks. I can't wait to see how house-guests respond. I have to find a house-guest.
One of my biggest hesitations about the Breville, aside from humorous price, was the reviews suggesting it was unable to toast evenly. I immediately bought bread at Acme and found even toasting, slice after slice. The local sparrows were happy with the experiment and urged a repeat run. I guess reviewers here must have gotten bum units? I am surprised Breville does not want to take back the product they bought? I noted in the manual (RTFM) that they recommend a dedicated circuit (and what next, a dedicated toast house?), but they do say if it doesn't get sufficient amps it may perform poorly. I agree with reviewers that an examination of the heating ribbons was disappointing: they are a bit dim and patchy; for this price I was expecting an advance view into Hell.
Anyway, so far I still think !. Beautiful 2. functionality supreme! And all for only $129 or so!

Attractively housed in brushed die-cast metal, this two-slice toaster features an internal smart chip that automatically lowers bread into the toasting slots with a single touch and regulates the toasting time. The unit offers push-button controls for toast, a bit more, bagel, defrost, and lift-and-look functions. With the "a bit more" setting, bread automatically lowers for additional toasting time. The lift-and-look function automatically raises the bread carriage during toasting without canceling or resetting the cycle, which allows for viewing, and if necessary, canceling the browning cycle at any time. The unit's LED panel illuminates according to the selected setting on the variable browning control. The display acts as a toasting progress indicator, counting down the time remaining in the toasting cycle. A beep indicates the end of the cycle. Other details include 1-1/5-inch-wide by 5-1/5-inch-deep slots, a 900-watt heating element, a Breville assist plug for easy cord removal, and cord storage underneath. To clean, simply wipe the exterior with a soft cloth as needed. The toaster measures 13-1/4 by 8-1/4 by 9 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Dualit 2-Slice Toaster, Petal Pink Review

Dualit 2-Slice Toaster, Petal Pink

I purchased the Dualit toaster about 12 months ago and am glad that I did.
I wanted a pink toaster to match my kitchen decor and I was sold on the Dualit idea because of its reputation for quality workmanship.
The toaster produces excellent toast. Though the clock ticking noise may be annoying for some people, I like it. The toast that is produced is crisp on the outside but still moist on the inside which is just the way my husband and I prefer our toast to be cooked.
I like the crumb tray feature; it makes for easy cleaning. I also purchased the sandwich case and I am very pleased with the quality of the toasted sandwiches.
Overall, the toaster is a little on the pricey side, but I think it's worth every penny.

DeLonghi DTT312 2-Slice Adjustable Toaster Review

DeLonghi DTT312 2-Slice Adjustable Toaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I have been on a, to date, futile search for a toaster which actually does what it is supposed to do, properly toast bread. We have purchased and tried/tested about 10 different toasters and they have all been, more or less, disappointments as toasters. It seems that toaster manufacturers are more interested in style and fancy electronic functions than in producing a toaster which properly toasts bread to various degrees of doneness evenly. Most toasters require toasting at maximum then, when that cycle completes, immediatley continuing with an additional cycle of somewhat shorter duration because the maximum setting is inadequate to produce dark but unburnt toast in one maximum setting cycle. I ascribe this problem to two causes, underpowered and wide slots which keep the heating elements too far from the sides of the bread.
When we came upon the DeLonghi DTT312, and saw how the slot is variable and that the heating element moves with the variance of the slot width, we thought we'd finally found a toaster which would properly do what it's supposed to do, toast. We were also impressed with the potential ability to heat and toast a variety of breads, bagels, buns, sandwiches, pannini, etc. I was a bit concerned that it is only 800W in Canada (the Kenwood brand in the U.K. is 1075W and its a lot cheaper there, as low as 25 British pounds) but, because the element on one side moves with varying the slot width, I thought that would compensate for the relatively low power/heat. Anticipating that we'd found the Holy Grail of toasters, we bought it. We were like expectant parents, the removal of the toaster from its box was like the birth of a baby with all the hopes for the toaster being successful. I plugged it in, it turned on with a gentle chime, its first sound. I turned the toaster on by pressing the 3 wavy line setting and looked into it. I observed that some of the heating strips didn't glow at all and the strips that did glow glowing had small loops sticking out randomly at various points which glowed very red/hot with parts which didn't glow much. I thought, oh oh, potentially uneven toasting. I cut two identically thick pieces from a whole wheat loaf of bread and gently fed the toaster its first meal with the controls set to their recommended settings. After a short while, another gentle chime emanated from the toaster signalling the toast was ready. I pulled the lever upwards and discovered that the toast was inadequately toasted. I looked in the manual again and decided that the manual was incorrect, it had recommended setting the heat too low, two wavy lines, instead of higher, 3 wavy lines, for non-pre-sliced bread. I toasted two more slices at the higher heat setting which worked but the toast is unevenly toasted, the left slice was starting to burn at its left edge and both were more toasted a bit more in the middle than at their bottoms and tops. I was somewhat disappointed. I hadn't found the Holy Grail of toasters, just a variation on the theme of toasters which don't properly toast. I don't know if it is this particular toaster which has a manufacturing defect in that some of the heating strips don't work and that the quality of all of this model's heating elements/strips is inconsistent which causes parts of them to bulge out and get hotter than the rest of the parts of the strips which continue to lie flat but are not as hot both of which cause uneven toasting. I am taking this toaster back and will try to get the store to plug in another one to see if it has the same problems. If it doesn't, I'll exchange the one I've got for it. If If it does, I'll be requesting a refund and just use my energy wasting but evenly toasting "toaster" oven.

OK, I fell for the cute accessories and cheery look of this toaster, plus its low price. (Why should a toaster, which works according to a simple principle, be expensive?) Silly me. It is so lightweight that it tips to one side when you push down on the lever. But the main problem is that it doesn't toast evenly. A single piece of sliced whole wheat bread comes out with gradations of toasted-ness . . . from pale to burnt. Also, the slots do not accommodate longer pieces of bread. Oh, and the toast literally pops! up, halfway out of the toaster, as if auditioning for a role in a sitcom. Maybe I should give it another star just for entertainment value.
