(More customer reviews)I have had this oven for several months now. I missed an opportunity to by it as a factory refurbished unit, and ended up buying it new here. Initially, I wanted to hold out for a convection oven with a larger capacity, but the reality of unit size and lack of availability of a larger oven with similar features convinced me to by this model.
I think I made the right choice. It is large enough to bake and broil a wide variety of things without having to resort to the "big oven", it has accurate, even temp control, and enough features and custom settings that I am still discovering new and better ways to use it.
It is a pretty large oven, does everything advertsed in best of class fashion, it's very easy to clean, and looks "right" no matter how your kitchen is outfitted. Even simple tasks like making toast are handled better than any regular toaster or cheap toaster oven that I have tried. When toasting bread or bagles, the first part of the cycle brings the bread up to teperature without bringing the heat elements up to "toasting" tepmerature. Towards the end of the cycle, the elements glow bright red, and toast both surfaces very evenly, and to taste. The result is perfectly toasted bread, bagles, pizza slices, etc, without cold centers. The cycle can easily be tailored for your favorite bread. Perfect.
Before I forget, someone posted a "review" here that really was a question about what temp the oven is capable of. The oven can also broil, so that would indicate that it can reach high temps, and in fact, it can. The "bake" setting allows you to select a temerature on the display up to 500 degrees. Most any cooking technique that can be done with a quality conventional oven can be done with this gem. And more. When I first started using the oven, I checked it's indicated temp with my electronic thermometer that I use for calibrating industrial sensors. In every case, the indicated air temp was within a few degrees of reality. My full sized oven wasn't anywhere near that close when it was new.
Broiling, baking, defrosting, and reheating leftovers are also given the benefit of digital control over the cooking cycle. Even the crumb tray was designed for effective operation, and ease of cleaning. I have used a number of dedicated convection ovens, and more than a few toaster ovens over the years, but this one is in a class by itself. Even if you grew up with the microwave, this oven won't gather dust on your countertop.
Update... July 12, 2005. This oven is used most every day, and has proved to be a solid performer. As time passed, I have used pretty much all of the functions of the oven, and learned to customize settings to please me along the way. I have not had a single problem with the oven since the day it arrived, and being easy to keep clean, it still looks factory new (when I clean it). It is about as large as I care to have on the countertop, and for bigger jobs, I simply use the main kitchen oven. For most anything else, this is the oven that gets the call. I still rate five stars.

(More customer reviews)I own this KitchenAid model, and it is the second KA mixer I have owned. This model does a good job, and was a great replacement to my older model K45 of 30+ years. To me, the splash shield is indispensible for adding liquids, which tend to splash out, even at lower speeds. I would never be without my KitchenAid mixer, and it has helped out with cookie dough, decorator cake frostings, breads, quick breads, cakes, and anything else that needs a thorough mixing. The planetary action cannot be beat for efficiency.

Rival 2-Slice Toaster - White Review

(More customer reviews)After 25+ years my cheap old Black & Decker toaster died, so I was looking for another simple basic toaster that cost little, at least until I could look at all the reviews and choose the right toaster for my needs, I decided to take a chance on this cheap Rival, I've been using it every day for about 6 months... it works OK, does the job I need for standard bread and English muffins, I've not tried bagels but this does NOT have a bagel setting so I'm guessing it will not be good for those... this is called "cool touch" and it is, but if you're careless you can still burn yourself, but there is a toast "lifter" that should make toast easier to remove.

It has wide slots that adjust for thick English muffins to normal sandwich bread, and has a simple "toast shade" control, but you have to learn to set this properly for normal bread versus English muffins (muffins are set about twice the setting used for sandwich bread)... there is a "cancel" button that has always worked for me when I forgot and left the toast shade control too dark, the manual warns to use this "cancel" button instead of just lifting the "toast lever" since lifting it may damage the device... bread is "almost" evenly toasted, though one end of English muffins are always toasted a bit darker than the other end, but it's acceptable for my needs... has removable crumb tray that's easy to clean.

This is a simple basic toaster that costs little, so if your needs are simple this might work for you, however there is one problem for me, most of the bread I buy is just over 5 inches long, and I've always been able to toast it with no problems using my old toaster, but the "bread slot" on this toaster is just LESS than 5 inches, which means my bread will not fit unless I cut off about .25 inch, this is mostly a nuisance but I'm looking for another toaster that will accept my regular bread length... for the low price this toaster does an OK job for many people, though there are definite things lacking if you need more features.

(More customer reviews)I have had this set for over a year now and couldn't be more unhappy with it. The mixer does not reach the bottom of the glass bowl so regardless you still have to mix by hand to get all the flour and other ingredients off the bottom of the bowl. The mixer gets bogged down easily and between speeds of 3 and 4 it just stops. There's apparently a short between those speeds but if you giggle the switch it will work again.
The bowl is extremely heavy glass so once you've mixed your ingredients it's very difficult to man-handle the bowl to tilt it to get the ingredients poured in your pans. The beaters come out while mixing. I've pushed and pushed them in but once you lift the head the beaters often stay in the bowl. Not every time but enough that it's aggravating to have to dig your beaters out of wet cake mix.
I don't have a recommendation for something better. I'll keep using this one because I just can't afford another one. But I do recommend you pass on this one and find better luck with another brand.

Viking Range White Stand Mixer 7 Qt. Review

(More customer reviews)The machine died after 3 months. I am just starting to bake and was enjoying it until I taxed the Viking with bread making - not multiple loaves but just one at a time. It died very silently - no smoke or ozone/burnt motor odor - just quietly died while making cream icing with cream cheese and cream. I hit the reverse and it just started to make a gurgling noise and then was no more.
I called the company - not really the company but a repair facility in Detroit and was told the best they could do was to mail me a FedEx slip and I was responsible for boxing the unit and they would repair it.
When I suggested that they send me a box or another motor unit (I would send the current unit back) I was informed that this was not company policy. When I attempted to call Viking and when I asked to speak to corporate customer service I was directed back to the repair facility in Detroit - this happened over and over.
I mentioned that I bought the unit retail on the website they still insisted that they couldn't help me.
Cooks illustrated rated the Kitchen Aid Professional 600 as their number one choice - the Viking did not even make it into the first three best choices - I strongly agree. The Viking is more expensive and the service is lacking. And more importantly the maching is inferior.
I am considering the Hobart or the Kitchen Aid and I will keep the Viking as backup. When you buy a mixer get it from a department store that offers guarantees that include replacement units. I am going to the Sears website now.

It takes only 2 mintues for a thick pancake compared to on a stovetop. My only negative on this unit is that if you use butter it is very messy and hard to cleanup. If this had removeable plates it would be a 5 star in my book. Well worth the $20 I paid for it.

(More customer reviews)I had very high hopes for this oven. It has the Calphalon name on it. Their PR write up sounds so promising. The warranty is good. The oven is handsome. Too bad it fails as an oven though. I tested this oven thoroughly upon receipt. I knew I had to make sure this was a keeper given the price. Save your money and buy a $60 toaster oven. It is important to share that I never use a 'big' oven. Normal ovens pull 3500 watts. They cost a fortune and the overwhelming majority of people don't need such a cavernous appliance. So I bake a lot and everything in countertop ovens. This oven suffers from bad design flaws. You can only use the middle rack position or you will burn the top or bottom of your food. There is almost no internal clearance for anything but the shallowest casserole dish. If you use the rack in the inverted position facing downwards (it has a 'dip' design to - not flat) and pull the rack out to safely remove the dish, the dish slides at a fast clip right out of the oven - almost lost a dish as it rapidly headed for the floor. This is happening because the rack tips down once you pull it forward enough to safely grasp the hot pan. Now I had to flip the rack and use it in that position due to the excessively low clearance - my small casserole dish wouldn't fit and I couldn't move the rack down lest I burn the food - you see where this circle never ends. This occurred regardless of using a casserole dish or a bake sheet. And the back left quadrant cooks much faster than the rest of the oven. I had to watch the food and rotate the pan - talk about aggravating. The back of the oven is actually angled forward presenting a really strange limitation on what it can really hold. I tested many different types of items in the oven to be as thorough and fair as I possibly could especially since it came in such a large packing box. It is going to be a pain to return but return I must unless I feel like cursing everytime I attempt to use it. I am wondering if the people who designed this ever actually used it? A few design changes and this product wouldn't be such a beast.
Clarification: There is an 'edge' to the rack that, when used with the invert facing upwards will stop any dish from sliding out. But the loss of clear space above means only pans or very shallow dishes can be used. Tried using it in this position in the lowest slots but that was still so close to the lower elements that the bottom of the cinnamon rolls burned. Just want to be specific about the issues faced. I am looking for a counter top oven that does more than just pizza, biscuits, etc.. I believe the enclosed user guide mentioned you could use this oven to cook a chicken. It had better be either a cut up one or a miniature one.

West Bend 12-Speed Stand Mixers with 2 Mixing Bowls Review

Another Famous Brand I owned was so lightweight, it would move around on the counter while in use and would not turn the bowl, therefore, I had to stand there and continously scrape the bowl.
I am only giving the West Bend 41135 four stars because it is not perfect but it does come close! The bowl turns, there is room to add ingredients without stopping the motor, and raising the beaters, it is heavy enough to stay in place, it can be used as a hand mixer, and it has all the speeds anyone could want or need. If the mfg. had just color coded the beaters and the holes they belong in, they could be inserted quickly and easily. But that is no big deal--only a minor thing. I have color coded them myself so now, it is my dream machine! I am a proud and happy owner of this West Bend mixer.

Cuisinart BRK-200 Brick Oven Deluxe, Stainless Steel Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this beautiful toaster/convection oven to use as a second oven for entertaining/holidays and for everyday use to cook for just the two of us.
First of all, it's darned beautiful to look at. It matches my stainless appliances and looks fabulous on my counter. The controls are very easy to use. It comes with 2 racks (although you're only supposed to use one at a time) and a baking pan/broiler tray. But the best thing is that it comes with a baking stone which sits in one of the racks and the oven itself is lined with baking stone material on either side. The back of the oven has the convection fan. All non-stone surfaces are of nonstick material, which makes it a cinch to clean.
In the month I've had it, I've used this amazing appliance to bake cakes and casseroles, broil shrimp, make pizza, roast tomatoes and chickens and even toast an english muffin! It passed every test with flying colors. The oven is large enough to fit a whole chicken for roasting - and did a great job.
I'd say the weak points are that you have to turn the oven around to get the crumb tray out (a minor inconvenience) and both the crumb tray and the baking pan tend to warp when the oven is hot.
To use the baking stone, you must preheat the oven for at least 30 minutes. Not a problem for me, as I preheated while waiting for my pizza dough to rise. Worked out great.
I'm delighted to give this my highest recommendation.

He just grabs the food from the freezer, layers it around the NuWave, and starts it up. 20 min later dinner is ready. You can cook the main dish on one level and the veggies on another so you have one "pot" to clean up after dinner. It comes apart easily for cleaning and has a beep to alert you that your food is ready that is loud enough to be heard on the next floor. You should also know that it is easy to get replacement parts for the body if you use it enough to wear them out.

Chefmate 2 Slice Sandwich Maker Grill Nonstick Plates Upright Storage Review

(More customer reviews)My wife and I bought the Chefmate grill from Target for $10.40. First of all, it makes great grilled sandwiches. It takes about five minutes to warm up, then about four minutes or so to make your sandwich. Most of our sandwiches have been grilled nearly to perfection.
Now for the negatives. You have to use fairly small-sized loaf bread to fit on the plates. The correct size bread is easy to find in most supermarkets, so that's not a big problem, but don't expect the Chefmate to work well with big slices of bread. The other negative is that we use the Chefmate mostly for making variations of grilled cheese sandwiches. It melts the cheese just fine, but if any cheese runs out onto the grill (which usually is the case for us), it's a pain to clean afterward. The plate surfaces are nonstick, but you end up using toothpicks to clean out the congealed cheese after the Chefmate cools off. This isn't a huge problem, but it is annoying to know that you're going to spend several minutes cleaning the cheese off. This is the reason that I only gave the Chefmate four stars.
Overall, for about $10, it's a good buy.

(More customer reviews)I recieved this item as a gift from my neighbors. It was a true gift because I would not have purchased something like this for myself. I eventually found many uses for this little electric grill. As mentioned in the editorial review above, this grill is useful for batter based foods as well as for making sandwiches. Because we prefer hot cake, I have found it very useful for making small snack cakes. Using a standard cake mix with ordinary preparation, the bottom half of the griddle can be filled with batter. The batter will expand to fill the top as it cooks. The additional batter can be refrigerated for use the next day. The same is true of corn bread, pancake mix, browny mix, etc. The best part is the fact that the cakes will cook in just a few minutes. Pre-heating takes only 3-5 mins, and cooking about 4-8 depending on what you are working with, considerable less than the time to bake in a full size oven. This unit is also a welcome addition to the arsenal when battling toddler pickyness. Small portions of various items can be quickly prepared with out heating a full size oven. The way that it seals the bread at the seems when making sandwiches makes it useful for making healthy homemade "hot pockets" for lunches, as you control the ingredients and leave the preservatives at the store. Cresent roll dough can be stretched, doubled-over and filled. Although they are somewhat atypically shaped you get perfect omlets every time, without flipping. Simply chop/shread cheese or vegies add to scrambled eggs and fill the bottom. Although this grill has an easy to clean non-stick surface, I found it useful to wipe with an oiled cloth prior to cooking, PAM or a similar product would also work well. The effort I save putting together quick healthy lunches and snacks using this device, I have transfered to planning and preparing more elaborate meals in the evening, or entertaining.

Oven gets hot fast (less pre-heat time). Compact size (I live in an apartment so that's important). I gave it only 4 stars because it's not too attractive. But, it works well!

(More customer reviews)This is an excellent toaster. We went through a series of cheapo toasters from Walmart or wherever and I could never get good results. Was it too much to ask that both sides of the bread be toasted evenly from top to bottom with one cycle of the toaster? You think that would be a no brainer but apparently it's difficult for the el'cheapo brands to accomplish. This Dualit toaster gets the job done though. The bagel setting is great too. It toasts the cut face of the bagel perfectly while not burning the rest. I can toast pretty much everything between settings 2 and 3. Why it goes all the way to 8 I can't imagine. Perhaps if I need to start a fire on a short time delay I can stick some pop-tarts in there on 8 and then run away.
Anyway, you can do worse than buy this toaster. I highly recommend it.

I am single woman so no strong man around to help me get it apart. Can't wait to use the others. I have sprayed them all with Pam now so I HOPE to not have that problem again...once I can get the one piece apart.

(More customer reviews)This mixer is absolutely fantastic! The lift mixer is so much better than the stand style mixers in that the stand mixers get worn out and the bowl tends to jump around. I used to work with a stand style mixer and I would have to put all of my weight on the bowl while I was mixing stuff to keep the bowl from flying out into the kitchen! The motor is super powerful and I am very pleased with it. Since I started making everything we eat from scratch it is nice to have this great mixer to save me the labor of hand mixing stiff doughs and such. I noticed other people had problems with it. One person wrote that the bowl didn't stay in place at all, it needs to be snapped in, if you look at the back on the mixer you'll see a strip of metal where the bowl slides into, on the bowl where it meets the mixer is a metal nub, that's where it is supposed to snap in. They also said that they put the attachments in the dishwasher and they changed color. The instructions say to hand wash them ONLY!!!
It was an absolute pleasure just opening the box up that it came in. It came just as the seller described, brand new and shiny red. I look forward to years of use and everyday I admire it in my kitchen!
