Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven Broiler Review

Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven Broiler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this oven for several months now. I missed an opportunity to by it as a factory refurbished unit, and ended up buying it new here. Initially, I wanted to hold out for a convection oven with a larger capacity, but the reality of unit size and lack of availability of a larger oven with similar features convinced me to by this model.
I think I made the right choice. It is large enough to bake and broil a wide variety of things without having to resort to the "big oven", it has accurate, even temp control, and enough features and custom settings that I am still discovering new and better ways to use it.
It is a pretty large oven, does everything advertsed in best of class fashion, it's very easy to clean, and looks "right" no matter how your kitchen is outfitted. Even simple tasks like making toast are handled better than any regular toaster or cheap toaster oven that I have tried. When toasting bread or bagles, the first part of the cycle brings the bread up to teperature without bringing the heat elements up to "toasting" tepmerature. Towards the end of the cycle, the elements glow bright red, and toast both surfaces very evenly, and to taste. The result is perfectly toasted bread, bagles, pizza slices, etc, without cold centers. The cycle can easily be tailored for your favorite bread. Perfect.
Before I forget, someone posted a "review" here that really was a question about what temp the oven is capable of. The oven can also broil, so that would indicate that it can reach high temps, and in fact, it can. The "bake" setting allows you to select a temerature on the display up to 500 degrees. Most any cooking technique that can be done with a quality conventional oven can be done with this gem. And more. When I first started using the oven, I checked it's indicated temp with my electronic thermometer that I use for calibrating industrial sensors. In every case, the indicated air temp was within a few degrees of reality. My full sized oven wasn't anywhere near that close when it was new.
Broiling, baking, defrosting, and reheating leftovers are also given the benefit of digital control over the cooking cycle. Even the crumb tray was designed for effective operation, and ease of cleaning. I have used a number of dedicated convection ovens, and more than a few toaster ovens over the years, but this one is in a class by itself. Even if you grew up with the microwave, this oven won't gather dust on your countertop.
Update... July 12, 2005. This oven is used most every day, and has proved to be a solid performer. As time passed, I have used pretty much all of the functions of the oven, and learned to customize settings to please me along the way. I have not had a single problem with the oven since the day it arrived, and being easy to keep clean, it still looks factory new (when I clean it). It is about as large as I care to have on the countertop, and for bigger jobs, I simply use the main kitchen oven. For most anything else, this is the oven that gets the call. I still rate five stars.

KitchenAid K5SSWH Heavy Duty Series 5-Quart Stand Mixer, White Review

KitchenAid K5SSWH Heavy Duty Series 5-Quart Stand Mixer, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a heavier mixer than the "Artisan" model, and the bowl raises and lowers on a lever rather than the head of the mixer lifting up. If you make heavy breads or a lot of bread for your family, this may be a better choice mixer with the stronger motor.
You can also add a grain grinder to the front of the device--there's a lid that flips up and you insert it into a hole with a positioning pin. The motor then turns the grinder, sausage stuffer or vegetable grater. The grinders work terrific; the vegetable grater/slicer is a variation on those cone slicers and not my favorite attachment. But for a one-stop heavy-duty device that mashes potatoes, kneads bread, whips egg whites, stirs cake batter or grinds wheat flour or rye flour, this can't be beat.

Its ergonomically designed handle is contoured to fit the hand and makes lifting the bowl more comfortable. The unique mixing action eliminates the need to rotate the bowl by spinning the beater clockwise and the shaft counterclockwise, moving the beater to the edge of the bowl at 67 different points. This ensures a quick and complete mixing action. TheStand Mixer includes a flat beater, dough hook, and wire whip which will add to the versatility of the mixer.

Oster 3210 Electric Nonstick Quesadilla Maker Review

Oster 3210 Electric Nonstick Quesadilla Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I could not do without this product. I have made not only Quesadilla's but also pancakes, omlets, sandwiches, and I am still looking at more recipes. It takes only 2 mintues for a thick pancake compared to on a stovetop. My only negative on this unit is that if you use butter it is very messy and hard to cleanup. If this had removeable plates it would be a 5 star in my book. Well worth the $20 I paid for it.

Bake favorite quesadilla recipes right at home in just minutes with this easy-to-use quesadilla maker. Simply place a flour tortilla on the nonstick grill, then add ingredients like shredded cheese, salsa, and shredded or thinly sliced pieces of cooked meat, poultry, or vegetables. Cover with another flour tortilla, and close the lid. For best results, fillings should be spread as evenly as possible, up to a 1/2-inch from the edge of the tortilla so that the edges can seal together. The countertop appliance works great not only for making quesadillas, but also for soft tacos, omelets, fajitas, pancakes, pita-bread sandwiches, and much more. Remove cooked items using a plastic or wooden spatula to help protect the nonstick surface. An automatic "ready" light indicates when the unit has reached the correct cooking temperature, and cool-touch handles makes it possible to raise or lower the lid without the need for an oven mitt. To clean, wipe the lid, base, and cooking plates with a damp cloth and towel dry. The unit can be compactly stored using the convenient cord-storage compartment and by standing it in a vertical position. The quesadilla maker measures approximately 12-1/5 by 9-3/5 by 4-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Yogourmet Multi Electric Yogurt Maker with CBA Starter Review

Yogourmet Multi Electric Yogurt Maker with CBA Starter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted to get a yogurt maker so that my daughter and I could have a ready supply of good-quality yogurt on hand at all times. After doing a little research I decided to go with the Yogourmet machine, and ordered the one that came with starter. The first batch turned out great - I used organic whole milk, with about 2 cups of half and half added to bring the quantity to 2 quarts. After 4 hours we had a nice thick yogurt.
The next batch I made, using 2 quarts of organic whole milk and a tablespoon of yogurt reserved from the first batch (based on a recommendation from a yogurt recipe), was not quite as successful. It took twice as long to become "yogurt", and even then it was soupy. It was important to me to be able to use yogurt as a starter, rather than having to rely on the powdered starter, so I wanted to try again using yogurt as the starter.
The next time I decreased the amount of milk and increased the amount of starter, using only a quart and a half of milk, and a 1/2 cup of starter. It all turned out well, and in about 4 hours we had a container of nice, thick yogurt.
Two comments: first, I've read that chemicals in the plastic inner container can leach into the milk, so I am going to switch to a glass container. Second, my dream yogurt maker would require me to do just 5 things: pour the milk into a container, turn the machine on, add the starter when the milk is at the right temperature, then unplug the machine and remove the inner container.
As it is now, I have to heat the milk, watch the thermometer, pour the milk into another container, then keep checking the temp to see if it's ready for the starter (takes about 40 min in a 65 degree room), then stir in the starter, then put the milk in the container, add water for a water bath, then turn it on, then unplug and remove the inner container.
I'd like a yogurt maker that operates something like a bread machine, where you put the milk in, then the machine heats it up, beeps when it's the right temp for starter, then after you've added the starter, stirs the it into the milk, then goes into fermenting mode, then beeps when it's done. Maybe they could even come up with a way to add the starter automatically, like making a little container that releases the starter when the milk reaches the right temperature. The machine I have really just keeps the milk at a constant temperature. I have to do everything else. But of course, the machine I'm thinking of would probably cost a fortune.
Anyway, it's giving me what I want - yogurt made with quality ingredients at a low price - even though I have to devote about an hour of my time to paying attention to it.

I bought this toaster about 6 months ago from Amazon without reading the reviews. Shortly before it got here I noticed the review section and read all the horrible reviews for this toaster and became really concerned that the toaster wouldn't work properly. It came about six months ago, I've used it pretty much every day since then and it works just fine. No weird, uneven toast. No sticky handle. None of the scary stuff in the other reviews. Its pretty, and it works. Its a toaster.

KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus Series Review

KitchenAid Professional 5 Plus Series
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this mixer as a gift, and honestly, it is so great that I almost feel guilty I don't use it every day. I have heard good things about the reliability of Kitchen Aid mixers, and this one is far more powerful than what I actually need it to do.
One especially great thing is the slow-start feature--I do a lot of cake batter and icings, and it's nice to avoid getting flour all over the cabinets after each round of mixing. It mixes very thoroughly, although I was initially suspicious since the bowl doesn't rotate. You do have to stop and scrape the bowl, as with any mixer.
The machine is also incredibly quiet--it makes less noise than the microwave does. I like the fact that the bowl and white attachments are dishwasher safe, too. It might seem trivial, but I also like the styling of the wider bowl that comes standard with this model, instead of the narrower one that comes with the Artisan.
At first I thought the bowl-lift thing might be uncomfortable to use, since I'm used to tilt-head stand mixers. The bowl has two tabs with holes that fit on either side of the mixer, plus a metal nub that rests in a slot at the back. Once those three points are secure, you rotate the lever to lift the bowl to mixing position, and it's very stable.
I've only found two minor inconveniences with this machine. First, it's pretty tall, so it won't fit on the counter underneath my cabinets--I have to move it back and forth from another shelf to use it, and it's heavy. Second, when you're done mixing and lower the bowl, it's hard to scrape all the stuff off the beater because you can't get a good angle. So you have to detach the beater and let it fall into the bowl and when the bowl is off the mixer you can scrape everything out. Thinner stuff like cake batter wouldn't be a problem, but for frosting or mashed potatoes, a lot of stuff is left on the beater. This is not a big deal--just a different thing to get used to after a tilt-head mixer.
I have the cobalt blue model, and I hesitated because I thought it might be too "loud," but it's beautiful and I'm so glad I got this one.
I'm not a professional baker, but I use my mixer frequently, and I'm delighted to have something that looks great and works so well.

The Professional 5 Plus has a powerful 450-watt motor that delivers enough power to handle the heaviest mixtures, and mixes large batches easily. This special bowl lift model has brackets on the bowl that fit over support pins on the stand mixer, which is than lifted up by a handle on the right side of the mixer to lock the bowl in place while mixing (this design is made to handle heavy mixtures and large recipes). The 5-quart polished stainless steel bowl is dishwasher safe. Its ergonomically designed handle is contoured to fit the hand and makes lifting the bowl more comfortable. This mixer also features a unique mixing action: the beater spins clockwise as the shaft spins counter clockwise, moving the beater to 67 different points around the bowl. This distinctive mixing action creates a thorough blend of ingredients and eliminates the need to rotate the bowl. 10 speeds allow the user to select the right speed for the mixing job, from very high to a very slow stir. The flat beater, dough hook, and professional wire whip add to the versatility of the mixer. In addition, the Soft Start mixing feature helps prevent ingredient splash-out and "flour puff" at startup, while "Overload Reset" helps eliminate overheating of the motor. A hinged hub cover flips up, allowing easy installation of attachments and never leaves the mixer.Optional attachments (sold separately) complete the package to make cooking a pleasure. I like the looks of this oven. I had a Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven that I tossed after two years. Unlike the Cuisinart the T-Fal is easy to clean, it doesn't have an area by the glass-hinged door that is impossible to clean. The crumb tray is accessed from the front of the oven, not the back. Also the T-Fal shuts off when the time on the timer is done. The warming tray is great for warming hot dog buns while broiling hot dogs in the oven. The controls are straight forward and easy to use without having to read the manual. I'm looking forward to many years of good cooking with this oven. If I experience any problems I'll update this review.

I spent hours online reviewing toasters from different companies. I found you can buy a toaster for as little as $10.00 and some are over $400.00. I was more confused after my research so I decided to go with a brand name I have had great luck with - OSTER - the toaster does just what I want it to do. It toasts and toasts evenly. I love the frozen food button for my grandkid's toaster strudles and I use the bagel button to toast hamburger buns. I would recommend it to everyone.

Dualit 2-Slice Toaster, Petal Pink Review

Dualit 2-Slice Toaster, Petal Pink
Average Reviews:

I purchased the Dualit toaster about 12 months ago and am glad that I did.
I wanted a pink toaster to match my kitchen decor and I was sold on the Dualit idea because of its reputation for quality workmanship.
The toaster produces excellent toast. Though the clock ticking noise may be annoying for some people, I like it. The toast that is produced is crisp on the outside but still moist on the inside which is just the way my husband and I prefer our toast to be cooked.
I like the crumb tray feature; it makes for easy cleaning. I also purchased the sandwich case and I am very pleased with the quality of the toasted sandwiches.
Overall, the toaster is a little on the pricey side, but I think it's worth every penny.

Cuisinart DLC-10S Pro Classic 7-Cup Food Processor Review

Cuisinart DLC-10S Pro Classic 7-Cup Food Processor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While I usually chop on a plastic cutting board with a big chef's knife, the Cuisinart makes several tasks a lot easier. Chopping cooked or raw meat is one. If you are making hash from leftover corned beef, a short burst in this food processor is the easiest way to go. For mixing certain pastry doughs (pie or pate brisee) this is also a very good item to have, although you have to be careful to go slowly and not overprocess. The one thing the Cuisinart does is heat up the dough if you whirl it around too much, so you have to be careful. And if you put too heavy a bread dough in, using the plastic bread blade, you can heat the shaft up enough to jam the blade onto the central post and that's a big nuisance. However, with these cautions, the Cuisinart is hands-down my favorite food processor and for shredding, slicing thinly or chopping, pretty much the best kitchen appliance for the job.

Cuisinart WM-SW2 Dual-Sandwich Nonstick Electric Grill Review

Cuisinart WM-SW2 Dual-Sandwich Nonstick Electric Grill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The product does exactly what it is billed to do: it grills sandwiches quickly. The problem is that the grill is very small, so normal grocery store bread is way too big and it hangs out the side. In addition, if you want to make a bigger sandwich, i.e., stacked with several ingredients, the lid will not close and lock without Herculean strength and the risk of burning yourself. It does OK with two small pieces of bread and a small amount of cheese. But, for that, it's just as easy to heat up a nonstick frying pan. It would be, however, handy for students in dorms or others with no access to a stove.

I bought this Cuisinart toaster about a month ago. Previously, I owned a cheap Toastmaster two slice toaster that I had since college.
This toaster is compact but has everything you could need. It has slots wide enough for homemade bread and bagels, a reheat and defrost button and a cancel button. It is a very powerful toaster for sandwich bread. The first time I used it I was too excited to read the instructions first so I set the LED dial at 5 which was the level I used on my Toastmaster. That was a mistake because I burnt the toast crisp. This toaster I only have to set to a 2 to get my toast a nice brown shade. It really puts off the heat. I don't eat bagels so I can't say how it does on them. On Toaster Strudels it works well at a level 4 or 5 setting.
I love this toaster and would buy it again!

Zojirushi BBCCX20 Home Bakery Supreme Bread Machine Review

Zojirushi BBCCX20 Home Bakery Supreme Bread Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third bread machine. My first was the original Zojirushi, and the second was a Breadman. I still use both the Breadman and the Zojirushi BBCCX20. According to most baking sites I've seen, the Zo and the Breadman are the leading contenders in this category today, so here's my comparison:
- The Zo is more solidly built and has a stronger motor. It can handle stiffer doughs that literally stopped the motor on my Breadman.
- The Zo is much quieter than the Breadman. The pan in the Breadman clanks around in its clips and makes quite a racket during kneading.
- Unfortunately, the Zo has an annoying 15-second beep to signal the right time to add nuts or fruits. As far as I can tell, there is no way to turn off this feature. For me, this is a big deal, because I used to love to set up my bread machine to make bread during the night, giving me a wonderful hot loaf of bread for breakfast. With the 15-second beeper, which sounds a lot like an alarm clock, using the Zo BBCCX20 overnight simply isn't an option. I wish there were a way to turn it off.
- The double paddles on the Zo do a better job of mixing ingredients without the need for scraping down the sides of the pan.
- The Breadman is a much more flexible machine. It's "Pause" button let's you add 15 minutes at any point in the cycle. Without the ability to pause, the Zo sometimes starts baking before the loaf is fully proofed. With bread, where the length of the rise depends on so many factors, having the flexibility to pause during a cycle is very valuable. You can program custom cycles on the Zo, but that's only a solution if you know in advance that your loaf is going to take some extra proofing time.
- Crust control is better on the Breadman. Even set on "light" crust, the Zo tends to produce a dark crust with breads that have a lot of sugar.
- The Breadman has a small bin that automatically dispenses "add ins" (fruits, nuts, etc.) at the right point in the cycle. You just load it up at the beginning of the cycle and the "trap door" releases the goodies at the right time near the end of the kneading cycle.
In a nutshell: The Zo is a better built, more powerful, quieter bread machine. It's solid, reliable, and great for doughs that would stop a lesser machine. The Breadman, on the other hand, provides much greater flexibility to make changes to the cycle once you've started and to get the crust you like. It also has an automatic fruit/nut dispenser and no long, annoying beep. If Zojirushi and Breadman would combine the Zo's motor and mechanics with Breadman's control panel and programming, they'd have the perfect bread machine. As it is, you have to choose based on what's most important to you.
UPDATE 02-JAN-2010
I found a new bread machine that has replaced both the Zo BBCCX20 and the Breadman as my favorite machine. It's the Zojirushi "Mini" (BB-HAC10). It takes up half the counter space of the Zo BBCCX20 and makes a perfect size loaf for a small family. It still doesn't have the flexibility of the Breadman, but at least they shortened the "add ingredients" beep (which goes on for so long on the full-size Zo that I can't use it for overnight bread making). Other than the beep, the Zo Mini is the quietest bread machine I've found. I really like it. You can find a more complete review on the Zo Mini product page. Happy Baking!

Zojirushi Home Bakery Supreme 2-Pound-Loaf Breadmaker Review

Zojirushi Home Bakery Supreme 2-Pound-Loaf Breadmaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was fortunate to have my parents decide upon a bread maker as a gift to me and allow me to pick the model I wanted...knowing I'd spent the last year actually studying the art of bread making by hand from some pros and cookbooks.
I had my doubts, however, that a machine could replace all I was learning to do...
...it can!
Here are some highlights of why I chose this machine initially then I'll get down to what I know about it now having used it non-stop:
STAINLESS:
I had no intention of pulling a bread machine in and out of the cabinet each week so I knew for sure, if it was going to sit countertop, it needed to be stainless.
LOAF SHAPE:
I knew I wanted the shape of this loaf. Most turn out looking like an odd rocket with the top of the loaf on one of the small sides of the rectangle which screams "odd bread machine loaf" and every slice except the first few is all square edges. This machine actually bakes a loaf that makes it look like it came from a real bread pan. Not only do I prefer the soft top and crusty edges on each slice more, but it looks beautiful if you are entertaining and serve it or offer to bring bread at a potluck.
Now, here's what I know now:
SETTINGS:
It also has a setting to make meatloaf
HOMEMADE:
It DOES have a homemade course in case you want to totally change the settings for a loaf. You can program every single thing it does longer or shorter if you have some recipe of your own that you want to knead longer or shorter, sise longer or shorter, etc etc.
SOURDOUGH STARTER:
It has a cycle to help you make sourdough starter...just the starter with the recipe!
CAKE:
It has a cake setting and cake recipes. We made a great chocolate cake...love this for entertaining. I can make it prepare a warm dessert while I am busy with guests and the house smells amazing!
JAM:
It has a jam course to very easily make homemade jam for the bread for you!
DOUGH:
It has a dough course so you can let it do the hard stuff then you can shape the dough into a pizza, rolls, chiabatta, cinnamon rolls, soft pretzels, etc.
WHEAT:
It has a setting especially for wheat bread to make it perfectly
TWO KINDS:
It has a quick loaf setting that makes bread in 2 hours 18 min or the regular basic bread setting that makes it and bakes it in 3 hours 45 min.
Now some other goodies:
TWO KNEADING ARMS:
I have had a bread machine before with one tiny kneading arm but, let's face it, it's like kneading bread with one arm. This, when you look through the window, truly looks like the motions you'd use on your own as it has two kneading paddles rather than one.
NO TEFLON, BUT STILL NON-STICK: Fortunately, with all the reports on Teflon, they did not use a Teflon coating for this pan. (Someone said in an older review that theirs did...either they have updated the machine and removed it or the reviewer just thought it was due to it being non-stick. My manual says it is not Teflon and as a chef who avoids it, it's obviously not. I know what Teflon looks like even if someone tried to sneak it in.
There is no dark Teflon coating.) However, it's extremely non-stick and I usually merely only need to brush away a few crumbs after use. I've never had to put it in the dishwasher.
SIZE OF LOAF:
This makes a 2 lb loaf...or less. If you need more bread, it has the capacity. But I often use recipes for smaller loaves too. It gives you option. If I make a 2 lb loaf I get a great size slice that fills me up for breakfast with one slice. Also, on my old bread maker I used to have years ago, sometimes the dough would rise too high, spill over the edge and burn, this extra capacity allows for lots of rising!
ADD-INS:
It beeps near the start of the loaf to tell you you can add in raisins, nuts, etc. At this time I often add in cheese chunks. That way they don't totally melt in the preheating stage and I get some amazong jalapeno cheese bread with some bigger pieces of cheese in it.
CRUST SETTINGS:
It allows you to choose if you want your crust to be light, dark, or medium.
So bottom line...we are a two chef household. Big bakers. I've reviewed a few bread making cookbooks on Amazon this past year when I was in my bread making phase doing everything by hand...
what a waste of time! I love this machine!
TIMER CYCLE:
My favorite thing to do is use the timer cycle. I can put my ingredients in in the morning and have it set to greet me with a warm loaf as I walk in the door from work in the evening.
But what if I work late?
AUTOMATIC WARMER:
It automatically keeps the loaf warm for 30 minutes if you don't take it out when it's done!
This is also great for the best way to wake up in the morning...set it at night, go to sleep and wake up to homemade bread for breakfast. If I sleep in? It stays hot.
For dinner parties I can plop the ingredients in that morning and work on prep for the meal and when guests arrive a hot loaf is timed for dinner...always a hit.
PAYS FOR ITSELF OVER TIME:
We no longer buy hamburger and hotdog buns either. This MAKES a burger as the taste of homemade buns has no equal, even if it's a portobello burger it takes good! We used to buy a loaf or two a week of bread that was "blah". Baking a loaf is dirt cheap and makes for a very cheap breakfast or snack to when enjoying a slice. And if you never want to buy a bread machine cookbook or cookbooks like I did, search the internet...tons of recipes for bread machines free! Plus, we have friends who trade us stuff like eggplant or super sweet tomatoes they grew for a loaf of bread after I got them hooked.
FINISHED PRODUCT:
This shocks me how perfect the loaf is each time.
ok, so I am a raving fan...if I had to choose again, I'd pick the same one. We cook bread of some kind 2 times per week and I haven't had a bad loaf yet.
VARIATION:
The great thing is that there are so many bread machine cookbooks that you don't have to bake the same loaf twice. Honey wheat one day, beer bread the next, dill bread, jalapeno cheese bread, sour cream bread, cottage cheese bread, Anadama, roasted red pepper...any plain sandwich becomes new for us.
CLEAN UP:
It all slides out, there isnt any. And it came with a measuring spoon and cup which pretty much covers all measurements so you don't have but two of those to wash afterwards either.
NEGATIVES:
Like my old machine, you need to be sure to pull off the two kneading paddles if any remnants of the loaf remained under them after baking, also the paddle can come off in the loaf like any machine...same old negatives I had before which aren't a big deal, but just be sure you don't do what I did once and bake a loaf for someone who was sick and I delivered it to them with the paddle still protruding from the botoom. With a little twist it comes out.
Conclusion: I'm coming home to a Graham bread today...made with graham flour. As usual, it's a recipe I haven't had before. I have enough bread recipes to last a loaf a day if I wanted. Always baked perfect. Love the machine.
AND I've made loaves with very low fat margarine and they are great! YOu can actually lower the calories of your bread but still maintain that homemade yeasty taste I couldn't get with store bread.
