(More customer reviews)The Rival® Slicer (Model 1060C) is a generally well designed unit. I say generally because there appears, in my unqualified opinion, to be one major design and/or manufacturing flaw associated with the product.
The first unit I received had a broken speed control knob that prevented any speed adjustment. This unit was exchanged (thank you Amazon for making that process painlessly easy) for another. This second unit also had a broken speed control knob, the failure point being identical to the first. The stem on the speed control knob is either woefully under designed or it is being forced into the wrong position (it has a detent) during assembly. This is really too bad since the unit looks like it would do the job for which it is intended quite well.
What's good about this product:
- heavy-duty construction (parts I expected to be plastic are made from cast aluminum)
- heavy-duty, thick stainless steel blade - removable for cleaning
- angled slicing surface
- tray to catch the slices of what ever
- cuts up to 5/8" slices
- integrated cutting board
What's not so good about this product:
- There are rubber suction cups on the four bottom corners to protect the surface the unit is sitting on and hold it in place while it's being used. This would be a great feature except that the suction cups stick to the surface and pull out of the unit when it is lifted up.
- the speed control knob as stated above (and sole reason for number 1 rating).

I spent weeks going over reviews and comments about electric food slicers in preparation for replacing one that I had been using for about 25 years. It was heavy, clunky and would slide around the counter when used. I only took it out to use when nothing else would work. But it did slice. After reading all that I could in the reviews, I decided that the Model 632 seemed the best fit for my use. Cooking is a hobby and not a profession so I needed nothing more than a good quality, home slicer. I decided to keep the new slicer on the counter for a while so I could try it out. I think it has found a permanent home. I find that I am using it almost every day for bread, meat, cheese and vegetables. The operation is smooth and with the caliper dial, very repeatable. It is stable and does not "walk" on the counter when slicing. It appears to be well manufactured and durable. Several reviewers pointed to the on/off and lock switches locations as being a problem. I find just the opposite to be true. Their location is both logical and easy to use. Though I don't use it often, I found that the little extra that I paid for the tilt table was worth the cost. Overall, it has met and/or exceeded every expectation that I had prior to purchase.
Negative: If there is a downside, it would be that the component parts are not dishwasher safe. This is nothing more that a very minor annoyance, since the unit comes apart very easily and requires little or no effort to clean. (Just use caution when cleaning the blade.)
Overall: I may find problems in the future, but for the present it gets 5 stars plus. In my opinion, a good buy.

(More customer reviews)This product is not well designed for even light duty home use. The back plane is so flimsy that slices come out wedge shaped because the top flexes so much. There is a cavity below and in front of the blade that gets food particles in it and is very hard to clean. I used the slicer for Canadian bacon, baked ham and provolone cheese--then I went out and bought another brand product. Hope someone on Ebay will like the Deni "Classic"...Bud Caldwell

I had a Cuisinart, but the switch became defective after a few years of use, so I bought a replacement --- different model number (CEK-40), but essentially the same. It died (same switch problem) after my initial use --- just trying it out. Amazon, of course, took it back without any hassle. So I got the Wolfgang Puck knife --- had to wait a bit, as it was announced but not released. The blades seem a bit long to me, but that is minor. It works perfectly, and looks really solid. I've used it about a dozen times by now, mostly carving roasted chicken.

On the plus side it has a powerfull enough motor to slice chesses, which some slicers dont recommend and cleanup is a whiz. On the minus side, the material the slicer is made of drags a bit on the item sliced, sometimes making slices uneven. The grim reality of life is that meats and cheeses slide easier over plastic than they do over aluminum or steel. This problem likely exists with most slicers made of steel and aluminum, so dont discount this item becaues of this review. The easy cleanup is a good tradeoff for the functionality issues. Overall, for a slicer that I use every other week im satisfied with the purchase, but just a bit disappointed with the the function. My old plastic krupps slicer sliced thinner, although much more difficult to clean.

The nice storage box, not mentioned very well in description, makes it very easy to store. It is very annoying with other knives i have seen to have blades in one place, electrical part in another and carving fork somewhere else. this makes it very easy to store in one place. And its from a name you know and love!

(More customer reviews)This is the second cheap, pressed metal garlic slicer I've purchased in the last week in an attempt to find one that works (see my other reviews).
Compared to the first one, this slicer is only slightly better, primarily because the gap between the blade and base is narrower. In other words, it has the potential to cut thin slices (the first one was more of a garlic annihilator than a slicer), if only the blade was sharper than a dull bread knife! The way it is, it sort of works, but if you have any knife skills at all, you're probably better off saving your money, or spending it on a knife sharpener. You'll be a lot happier and waste less garlic.
Based on my personal experience and after reading other reviews, I've concluded that all of these inexpensive, stamped metal garlic presses are pretty much the same. They lack the quality and precision necessary to perform as advertised.

Alligator 11-1/4-Inch Slicer Review

(More customer reviews)I'm a huge fan of the Alligator dicers and was eager to try this slicer, but I'm not entirely impressed. First of all, it's heavy and has more parts to clean than its cousins. The disassembly and reassembly for cleaning is a bit awkward and being a bit of a klutz in the kitchen and always in a hurry, I'm not sure I could avoid getting cut on those blades. It's pretty much impossible to get cut on the dicer blades, even though they are sharp, because of the small grid and ease of just rinsing the thing off. This unit is quite a bit more elaborate and both top and bottom sections have to be taken apart for cleaning, leaving the blades more exposed than I'd like. They are also set in a tier arrangement (like bleacher seats set on edge) which makes the slicing more effective, but handling less safe. That for me is the downside.
On the upside, the unit slices most things really well. My first test was a tomato--a cruel test to start with :) but it passed with flying colors, cutting cleanly without squashing the tomato at all. You are limited in the size of tomato you can use if you want to slice a whole one, however, as the round grid is little more than 3" in diameter. Second test was a block of cheddar, something that is notoriously hard to slice evenly with a knife. This also sliced beautifully. I expected it to do a good job on things like carrots, zucchini, cucumbers and the like, and it did, but I'd be less inclined to use it for those things regularly because my beloved Microplane adjustable slicer works well for those too and I use the food processor for large quantities. Next test was a lime and although it did slice correctly, the juice squirted all over the place. It did eggs, strawberries and mushrooms perfectly, but that's to be expected. The only thing that didn't work was a ball of mozzarella, which got hopelessly squished and torn.
Bottom line, the product is well engineered (perhaps over-engineered) and very effective for some things, but needs a careful, patient hand for cleaning and the grid size does limit the amount of produce you can slice at one time.

Chef's Choice 630 International Gourmet Electric Food Slicer Review

(More customer reviews)I used to work in a deli and have used my fair share of commercial slicers. When I decided to buy one for home use, I knew that I didn't want one of the large, cumbersome slicers that I had used in the past, and that this would mean some tradeoffs in terms of power and quality. After taking a long look around, I finally decided on the CC-630, and I'm glad I did. I believe this unit offers an excellent compromise between commercial power and everyday practicality.
Please don't misunderstand... you don't want this slicer if you're looking to open a deli or restaurant. You can feel the slicer slow down as it cuts through denser foods (like meat and cheese) that the commercial slicers would just pass right through.
This little unit is best suited to the home user who wants to be able to cut enough cold cuts for a day's use - say packing lunches for the family. It's also great for slicing up roasts, BONELESS turkey/chicken, cheeses, and vegetables. Whatever you slice, slice only what you will consume immediately - or at least in the next day or so. That's the secret to those deli sandwiches... cut everything fresh for the best flavor.
Of surprise to me was how well this unit handles bread. It needs to be a fairly flexible bread (no cornbread/biscuits) as it has to bend slightly to accomodate the shape of the slicer. If you make your own bread, you can now slice it perfectly at nearly any thickness.
Just be sure to let anything that you make yourself cool completely before slicing. A warm roast or turkey breast just isn't rigid enough to hold itself together against the moving blade. If you're looking to use this for your thanksgiving dinner then you'd be better off investing in a good sharp carving set (not the serrated kind, but the kind you can resharpen). For thanksgiving leftovers, the slicer is ideal. Just don't do anything silly like trying to cut through bones as they can get caught in the moving blade... a serious safety hazard.
Why only 4 stars? Well, this unit would rate 5 in my opinion if not for two issues. First, a safety concern: the unit has seperate on/off and thickness controls. So what? Well, that means that you can turn the unit off and still leave the blade in an exposed cutting position (and at thinner settings, this is almost imperceptable visually). This can lead to serious injury should someone try to clean the unit thinking that the blade is safely shielded. Not a good idea if you have children around, or even if you don't. A simple solution is just to get in the habit of turning the thickness to zero immediately before or after turning the slicer off.
My other issue is that the manual says that no part of the slicer is dishwasher safe. This is extremely annoying as there are several removable non-electronic parts that are difficult to clean by hand. It seems absurd that the heavy duty plastic and stainless steel that these parts are made of would not hold up to a household dishwasher.
Overall, I find this to be an excellent slicer and highly recommend for home use. Much better than the cheaper underpowered models that are nearly impossible to clean properly.

(More customer reviews)I have thoroughly enjoyed having this slicer. I make bread and other methods of slicing have not been completely satisfactory. I want thinner slices to reduce calories and make the loaves last longer. This slicer does the trick. You can't just run the slicer easily back and forth with bread, you have to manually return the bread to the starting position, but that's no big deal. Sometimes the bottom crust catches between the blade and the housing and you have to pull it out gently without breaking the bread - but that isn't a big problem either. This is just so much better than other things I have tried, and without spending hundreds of dollars (or more) on a professional slicer. Well worth the money, wouldn't want to be without it.

Cuisinart CEK-40 Electric Knife Review

The knife and blades store securely in the very attractive tray and the attached cord tucks away neatly behind the stand. I especially like the bread knife which works wonderfully on crusty breads. The blades slip easily into the knife handle and are just as easily removed. This is definitely a quality product and well worth the price.

(More customer reviews)I make home made bread alot. Problem with current knife? I can't get the slices thin enough for sandwiches, and the bread crumbles, or squishes or.....This slicer is amazing! It actually slices thinner than any knife I have ever owned! Finally sandwich slices (1/2" or less) instead of irregular thick slices. I own a knife with a slicing guide ("magic knife") and its good for meat, but not so much for bread as it won't slice thin without a mess. This blade is razor thin and cuts through hot or cooled bread so easily you will be shocked. Don't hesitate to get it!

(More customer reviews)This was the slicer we were hoping someone would make. After using this, we've thrown away both the wooden box and the plastic slicer we've used.
The construction is durable, with the heft of solid maple giving a feel of quality as well as real beauty. Once we got a coat of mineral oil on it, the grain came alive and was even more beautiful. The stainless steel is sturdy and polished to a mirror finish with no sharp edges at all. They guide the knife nicely - and you don't end up with any plastic shavings in your bread that so often accompanied our previous products. The cut is straight, although a long knife is required as with any other slicer. Its function is rivaled only with its aesthetic quality. We always felt the plastic cutting guides looked so cheap and cheesy that we had to hide them in the cupboard. We leave this one counter with pride.
This slicer is the best thing since...well...home-baked bread.
