Hamilton Beach 25450 Gourmet Panini Press Review

(More customer reviews)You can't give this machine a bad rating. This Hamilton Beach Panini Press does one thing and one thing only, but it does it very well. If you enjoy pressed/grilled sandwhiches you will love this machine. As I write this I'm eating a feta/olive/artichoke/roasted peppers on pita sandwhich hot off the panini press, and it's scrumptious. I actually bought this as a christmas gift for my mother, but I probably use it more than she does.
The machine looks good on the counter, and has a large, non stick service. It's not on a hinge so it's designed to accept even the thickest sandwhiches without squeezing all the filling out. You can even "lock" the lid down to apply constant pressure, or lock it up to maintain minimal pressure or to not make contact with the top at all. It's great for quesidillas as well. Ignore the user that says it takes too long to heat up, it takes only a couple of minutes, about the time a waffle maker would take to heat. Even cooking on the stove you need to take a few mins to heat the pan! Also ignore the comment that this machine burns the bread before heating the filling, I've never had such problems, although I do wish there was a temperature control for further versatillity. But my bread never burns... I find 2-6 min will brown the bread perfectly, from lightly browned to nice and crispy (depending on how you like it) without burning it at all. I've never burned anything on this machine. I even once used it to grill some chicken, and it did the job nicely, though it's not really designed for that.
The only down sides are that there are no frills. I've seen other models that come with nice recipe books, this one has just a few hastily thrown together recipe ideas in the instruction booklet. There's no temp control either, which is fine, but it would be nice to have some kind of control (it would be more convenient if you wanted to use it for alternative purposes. The machine gets very hot, but that's to be expected. There's no alternate "plates" or cooking surfaces for say a flat "griddle" style surface, so you'll have to settle for the striated grate style surface, which in all honestly is not a big deal at all.
This is a great machine, at a decent price. It could be better with a temp control, some extra features, and a better recipe book, but all-in-all, you can't complain. It does its job, and does it very well.

As noted by another buyer, it's not the heaviest construction, but what do you expect for the price. It gets the job done and is really good for putting a little pizazz in a piece of meat. Done correctly, it can add a great finish look to a dinner roast or tenderloin, and is good for injecting, say, lemon juice into chicken breasts to add flavor and moistness.
Many uses defined only by your imagination. All in all, a good deal.

(More customer reviews)I've prided myself on my homemade pizza for years. It's something I take very seriously no matter if I am making my dough from scratch, or if time doesn't permit, using pre-made refridgerated dough. Now I've used all sorts of pizza pans to bake my pies from the round aluminum sheets, to the large round sheets with the holes in them, to the rectangular pans that pizzerias use for deep dish pizza. Bottom line is that none of them gave as true a pizzeria taste as when I used a baking stone. But if there's one drawback I had from using my stone is was my love of deep dish pizza. You could make some thick doughs on the stone, but ultimately you usually ended up with a very thick crust at the edges while the cheese, sauce, and other items all slid to the center of the pie.
With this round, deepdish edged stone you can make a true deep dish pizza because you can flatten out the entire pie just the way you want. You can leave it high at the edges or flatten it entirely. I like to make s chicago deep dish by layering the bottome with sausage or pepperoni before putting on a layer of cheese, then sauce, then one more layer of cheese and pepperoni on that. With this stone you can make a wonderful, layered pizza that you can never do on an ordinary pie pan or stone. Just marvelous!

I wanted to give it to the teacher to replace a toy challah that they had been using for many years. However, when it arrived it turned out to be made out of foam (not plastic like I assumed it was from the picture) and it contained a label warning that it is not safe for children under the age of 12. I assume that the warning label means that the foam is toxic, and it smelled strongly like glue. It also had some scratches obviously caused by poor handling on the part of the delivery company. If it had been new, and if I had needed a prop for a movie or restaurant, it would have looked great! As it is, it didn't meet my needs. The three star review reflects poor shipping (or packaging) and a poor description. So use this review differently depending on what you want from this product.
About the seller: They were very nice and immediately took the item back. I was not charged for return shipping and my money was refunded so I cannot complain about the company. They simply neglected to put this important information in their description. I would give them 4 stars, deducting one for failing to properly describe the product.

I spent weeks going over reviews and comments about electric food slicers in preparation for replacing one that I had been using for about 25 years. It was heavy, clunky and would slide around the counter when used. I only took it out to use when nothing else would work. But it did slice. After reading all that I could in the reviews, I decided that the Model 632 seemed the best fit for my use. Cooking is a hobby and not a profession so I needed nothing more than a good quality, home slicer. I decided to keep the new slicer on the counter for a while so I could try it out. I think it has found a permanent home. I find that I am using it almost every day for bread, meat, cheese and vegetables. The operation is smooth and with the caliper dial, very repeatable. It is stable and does not "walk" on the counter when slicing. It appears to be well manufactured and durable. Several reviewers pointed to the on/off and lock switches locations as being a problem. I find just the opposite to be true. Their location is both logical and easy to use. Though I don't use it often, I found that the little extra that I paid for the tilt table was worth the cost. Overall, it has met and/or exceeded every expectation that I had prior to purchase.
Negative: If there is a downside, it would be that the component parts are not dishwasher safe. This is nothing more that a very minor annoyance, since the unit comes apart very easily and requires little or no effort to clean. (Just use caution when cleaning the blade.)
Overall: I may find problems in the future, but for the present it gets 5 stars plus. In my opinion, a good buy.

Demarle Silform Half-Size Sub Roll Pan 503004 Review

(More customer reviews)I just ordered my second pan - not because the first one didn't work - but because I loved it so much that I needed another one!
These are the perfect size for sub rolls, and there is no way you're going to fit 5 rolls on a half sheet pan without them sticking together while rising - unless you have this product!
I even use them for lean dough baguettes - I just remove the bread from the forms for the last 10 minutes of baking and place them on the baking stone so the crust can carmelize.
These aren't cheap, but they'll last forever, and they take a lot of the frustration out of trying to bake in larger batches.
Now that I'll have two forms, I can bake once a week and have 10 beautifully formed, professional looking sub rolls.

(More customer reviews)I really love these pans - the size is small but that is not really a drawback because I can get 2 of them on one oven rack, so they really give me more flexibility than a larger pan. They still look brand new after about 6 months of use and clean up so easily! I avoid "nonstick" coatings as they always end up peeling off and I am not convinced they are safe, especially peeling, and sometimes you have to live with some sticking that way. But with a light greasing, cookies slide right off these pans even without that yukky teflon coating that so many cookie pans have. Definitely a winner!

I knew about them it was no a secret...once in a lifetime purchase I actually got the 26 piece set with the swivel block ! I am so happy... The handles are dishwasher safe BTW! BUT they just wipe clean with soap and water so quickly why would you put them in the dishwasher??? They are razor sharp and do not need to be sharpened ever single time they are used ... that is just a waste... CUTCO Knives have an odd handle and feel weird in my hand but these are AMAZING! well balanced superior sharp knife there is no other for the money...

(More customer reviews)I thought this was going to be the perfect toaster. However, once again a toaster misses the mark.
I particularly like the countdown timer, because I always wonder how much longer it will take to toast my bread, but it would be nice if the counters only lit up when the toast control is pushed down. They do make nice night lights in the kitchen, though.
Deficiencies:
1. The slots are wide, but they are short, so thick bread will go in just fine, but not some wider bread types. 12 grain breads in particular tend to be wider, and the slices end up caught on the ends of the slots.
2. The first thing I noticed was that the center elements of the toaster did not get as red as the outside elements. Thus I was worried that the bread would toast darker one side than the other, and that was the case.
3. One side (2 slots) of the toaster refused to work on the third attempt. It would not latch down.
4. I had to set the control to 5.5 (the highest setting is 6) to toast multigrain bread to a medium color. I would guess that a setting of 1 or 2 would just slightly warm the bread.
This toaster seems to be optimized for bagels. I want a toaster that is optimized for toast!
When I was a kid, we had toasters that went tick tick tick, toasted the bread just right and then dinged, and didn't cost much. Why can no one make a decent toaster like that now?

After using it for a few weeks I realized it toasted VERY unevenly. I'd had it for about a month when it completely broke. It wouldn't stay down, and even when I held the lever down, it wouldn't come on. Stupid piece of crap toaster. Negative five hundred stars.

Wusthof Classic 5-Inch Serrated Utility Knife Review

(More customer reviews)In Europe, this knife is called the "sausage" or "brunch" knife. Since Americans don't usually cut baguettes or weisswurst as part of making lunch, however, Amazon has chosen to call this what it is - the serrated utility knife.
Name notwithstanding, the edge on this knife is the same as the one on the Wusthof tomato and bread knives, and the knife does in fact do splendidly on tomatoes (which aren't too terribly different from sausage) and crusty bread (as long as it is skinny french bread - get an 8-inch knife for the hefty american stuff).
Where this knife truly excels, however, is cutting citrus. The blade is long enough to handle grapefruit, and the scalloped edge will cut even kumquats and key limes without crushing the pulp.
So, I would have called this the citrus knife (or, maybe, the "soft things with a hard skin" knife). While mine doesn't get used as often as the paring or chef's knife, it's among our kitchen's top-five.

I wanted to get one like my mom's, and this turned out to be less expensive, but a much better quality and heavier weight. I bought 2 of these, along with 2 of the smaller cookie sheets as part of Amazon's 4 for 3 promotion, and it only came to about $30! That is an incredible deal for stainless steel pans of this quality. I would absolutely recommend these.
